N2003: some questions because I am a lazy lazy man

by Brian Oste » Sun, 09 Feb 2003 13:40:23

I am sure I could spend all day surfing the net and find the answers
but:

1.  Has anyone tried their N2002 setups with N2003?  How do they
compare?  Can you easily convert them with a few minor tweaks?

2.  Is it just me or does D3D look way better than OpenGL?  For the
best eye candy should I run D3D?

3.  I have an Athlon 2100, 512mb, Geforce II Ultra.  I am not getting
very good frame rates.  Do you think a Geforce 4 Ti will increase
frame rates?  Or do you think my cpu is the bottleneck? (Loaded
question I know)

3a.  Any good tips to squeeze out a few extra frame rates for those of
us with aging systems?  I am looking for the best frame rate/eye candy
ratio here.  In other words what graphic options should I give up in
the quest for frame rates.

3b.  Is it just me, but I rather go to the dentist and get a root
c***than uncheck a graphics option... it is such a hard compromise.

4. Any good sites yet for setups/paint jobs?

5.  Does it seem like the fixed fast setups for the plate tracks are
better suited for a top fuel dragster?    (We may have problems in
RASCAR)

and a radeon8500...got everything on but bldg
shadows......1024x768x32...looks very good

I'll bet you don't have "Track Specular Highlights checked!  That one brings
my system to a crawl.

I got a gf ti 4200, amd 1900 xp, and get around 40 fps (with an occasional
hiccup) with all the graphics options except the second set of shadows.
Thats with 2x aa in 1152x864 32bit.

I had to give up a few fps to run that option, but the way the Daytona
daytime track looks so doggone good.....

What setups? I'm probably the last person thatshould go into
"Garage" for anything other than picking a setup from the list.

D3D has always looked better than OpenGL, but (until now) OpenGL has
always performed better.  Now that their performance is pretty much
the same, D3D is the easy choice.

You should get a 9700 Pro or a Ti4600 (my choice would be the 9700).

The shadows and the sun glare provide the absolute best improvement
in frame rates.

I think it's just you.

I heard that a renowned setup guy has released a full set of setups
for NR2K3, but I can't for the life of me remember his name.  You can
find it (his name) on the sierra forums though.

I haven't tried a fast setup, yet, just the jasper stuff. Jasper
seems a bit pushy to me, but some folks complain that the fast setup
is looser than my ex-wife after a military payday.

I would rather play with ascii graphics the go to the dentist for root
canal!

But that's probably just me.

Thanks John.  I probably will shell out the bucks to upgrade the
graphics card.  I just hate to do it and find out my cpu was the
bottleneck.  BTW, in the limited testing I have done I get better
frame rates with OpenGL than with D3D... but that may be because of my
card.  If I remember correctly some of the most significant
improvements over the geforce2 in the later cards was in D3D.

The setup guy's name is Bob Stanley.  I've used his setups in the
past and they are damn quick.

Oh ya,  almost all of my N2002 setups are derivatives of his.  Usually
they are posted on Light-speed, but they have not put them up yet.

I'm not sure if they are uploaded to their Setup Exchange on the main page
yet, but Bob's setups are posted in a thread in the NR2003 Setups Forum
