GPL OpenGL - optimum graphics/fps trade off?

by Jame » Fri, 21 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Are there any websites which detail what the best graphical settings to have
to obtain the best fps?

The sort of thing I'm looking for is someone whos compiled a database
testing different PC speeds against graphical settings to obtain the best
graphics/fps tradeoff.

I thought when I bought my Dell PIII 600, 256meg RAM, 32meg Viper card that
I'd be getting 35fps with most, if not all the graphics switched on.

I can get 35fps using the behind car F10 view, but as soon as I'm in***pit
view I only get 25fps at most.

I'm running 1024x768 (didn't seem much difference between 800x600 and
1024x768, but above this the fps dropped). I've got the mirrors just showing
cars.

I've got the following switched off:

Terrain texture
Crowds
Horizon
Clouds
Trees
Driver Arms

I have all trackside objects on.

Are my poor fps due to the nature of the OpenGL beta driver - ie. being a
non-supported driver.
Can anyone recommend any settings to try and improve the fps, but keeping
the graphics.  I think that the remaining textures left are the important
ones which make the game look good and are useful references for braking
points, etc.  Are settings in the core.ini the answer?  If so, what?

the main factor is the setting in core.ini for: MirrorsEvery = x.
highest FPS is when x=8.  see READMEGL.TXT that came with the OpenGL beta
driver.

I'm using a Dell P3 550 and TNT.  The biggest frame rate hit comes
from the lighting effects, so turning off the Dynamic and Specular
lighting will help lots. Next I lower the number of cars, then turn
off the drivers arms.  Don't have any textures on in the mirrors.
The best way for you to figure out what works on your system is to do
your own benchmarking.  Just keep repeating the start of the same race,
with the same number of cars, with you at the back of the grid, over and over
while changing one detail parameter at a time, and make a list of the changes
in frame rate caused by each change.

Or try the latest nVidia Detonator drivers - I think they overcome the
problem.

Um, Wouldn't it be easier just to use a 3dfx card, turn ON ALL the detail,
run it at 1280x1024, and not worry about your frame rate because it almost
never drops below 32fps? If you wanted more, you cound throw in a
Soundblaster Live... Sorry, but I can't imagine GPL without a 3dfx based
card. Gives me chills just thinking about it. Heck, even my old VooDoo
Banshee 12meg was better than the new TNT 32 meg in GPL. I do hope though,
that they offer a full OpenGL support for other types of cards someday, but
until then...

I've got a Orchid Righteous in my old P200.
The Viper kicks the Voodoo3 series ass when it comes to other games, its
just GPL it has problems with 'cos of no native support - buts lets not get
into any card arguments as they clutter up the newsgroup - they're both
excellent cards.  As for the Soundblaster Live I've got one and I think its
excellent.  What would recommend for the Lives many effects settings to play
GPL in? Some of the effects produce alot of echo, which sounds a bit weird
in a racing game.  I generally turn up the sound, but the neighbours'll
complain one day about racing 1967 racing cars in my study.

Yes, but the V2 front end is flickery... :(

Runs great in Ogl/Force...

Look in the gpl/app.ini and set your sound quality to "0" instead of
"2"--that gave me about 5 fps and I had a really hard time telling any
difference in the actual sound quality.

Doesn't this setting make it mono?  For me, I need the extra cues of
which side another car may be (especially during the starts).

slider all the way to the left(mimimum) I can turn on everything. As soon as
I move the slider to the right by any amount my FPS start dropping.
