OT: Display narrow and then widening

Been having this problem the last few days, in Windows and in LFS.

Screen goes slightly narrower of its own accord, then reverts after a
while. I updated video drivers but the problem remains.

It's set to 1024 X 768 and doesn't seem to be actually changing the
resolution, just flicking back and forth every five minutes or so.

Also tried at various different refresh rates to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated. This is most disconcerting when racing.

System is:
P4 3.0GHz
1GB DDR RAM
GeForce Ti4200 128MB running Forceware 71.89 Drivers
Viewmaster 19" Monitor
XP Pro

Thx in advance, Glenn

Yeah, I thought that may be it. No loose cables though. Could be on the
way out.

I had a dearly beloved (and now late departed) NEC FE950 that did
stuff like that (although mine was more of an occasional horizontal
roll-under/over at the top and bottom of the screen and a horizontal
fluttering around the aperature grill support wires).  That lasted for
about three months until one day the entire display just went into a
single vertical line. :(

I've considered fixing it (it was 4 1/4 years old, but otherwise it
had good brightness and shaprness), but the cost would probably be
close to a new CRT.

In the end, I've ended up with a Samsung 930B LCD (about $350 US
after rebates) which works well.  My only complaint so far is the
variation in color/brightness at different angles (sometimes just
sitting 2 feet from the screen, directly in front of the screen,
different parts of the screen vary, although that's generally only
noticeable if you're working with a uniform full-screen color/hue).
It's not enough to bother me much, but would be a consideration if
someone was doing graphics work.

If the raster itself is changing, this is the first sign of a failing
flyback or high voltage power supply.

This is NOT an end-user repair.  I won't even describe it.
