IPX Emulation via Dial Up Networking for NASCAR 3
It is possible to play NASCAR 3 ?modem to modem? bypassing slow ISP?s
by emulating an IPX network environment over a Dial-Up Networking
Server. However the DUN Connection does require some advanced system
configuration. Please read through this entire document before
attempting these instructions. If you are unsure about any of the
steps I recommend that you don?t even attempt this.
Have your Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD ready and reboot each machine
each time Windows asks you to. Some of these components may not be
available in Windows 95 unless the Plus! Pack is installed.
Install Dial-Up Server and Dial-Up Networking?
1. Click Start ? Settings ? Control Panel ? Add/Remove Programs ?
Windows Setup
2. Highlight the Communication line and click on the Details
button
3. Check the Dial-Up Server and Dial-Up Networking boxes
If the boxes are already checked then the options are already
installed and this step can be skipped
Dial-Up Server may not be available in Windows 95 unless the Plus!
Pack is installed
4. Click on OK to accept the new Windows Communications Options
and Apply the changes
5. Follow the on screen prompts and reboot if asked
Install the necessary Networking Components:
1. Click on Start ? Settings ? Control Panel ? Network
2. Select Components
Note: If any of these options are already installed they shouldn?t
need to be re-installed
3. Install Client for Microsoft Networks
Click Add ? Clients ? Microsoft - Client for Microsoft Networks
4. Ensure that Dial-Up Adapter is installed
5. Install IPX/SPX Compatible protocol
Click Add ? Protocol ? Microsoft - IPX/SPX Compatible protocol
6. Install File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Click File and Print Sharing and check both boxes.
7. Apply the changes, follow the on screen prompts and reboot if asked
If you feel uncomfortable with this next section I HIGHLY RECOMMEND
that you do not continue!
It may be necessary to unbind any Ethernet Adapters from
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol and TCP/IP (this step isn?t always
necessary, or you may have to go farther, it depends on the systems):
1. Select your Ethernet Card (i.e. Linksys LNEPCI II or 3Com Fast
EtherLink XL 10/100mb TX Ethernet Adapter) and click Properties
2. Select the Bindings Tab
3. Uncheck both IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol and TCP/IP Protocol
4. Click OK, OK and reboot if asked
If this doesn?t work it may be necessary to completely unload the
Ethernet Card from this hardware profile temporarily:
1. Click Start ? Settings ? Control Panel ? System
2. Select the Device Manager tab
3. Double click on Network Adapters
4. Highlight the Adapter and click Properties
5. Select the General tab
6. Under Device Usage select Disable In This Hardware Profile
7. Uncheck Exist In All Profiles
8. Click on OK a couple of times and reboot if asked
Note: This simply keeps Windows from loading the drivers for this
device. Simply reversing the steps will undo the process.
Create Dial-Up Networking Accounts for the other machine:
1. Double click My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking
2. Double click Make a New Connection and name it NASCAR 3 (you
can rename it, this is just or our reference)
3. Follow the rest of the on screen prompts
4. Once the new connection is created it will be necessary to
edit it?s setup
5. Click the RIGHT mouse button on the new Icon and select
Properties
6. Select Server Types
7. Under Type select PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows
95/98
8. Uncheck everything except Log On to Network and IPX/SPX
Compatible Protocol
Note: It may not be necessary to uncheck Software Compression, but it
is unselected on this machine.
Disable any network applications or Internet Pagers. Programs like
ICQ, Yahoo Pager or AOL Instant Messenger may wreak havoc on this
process by attempting to connect while you are racing.
Ok, that is it for the background setup. Now lets try out the new
?Dial-Up Network?.
Set up one machine as a Dial-Up Networking Server (this is the HOST
machine):
1. Double click My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking
2. Click the Connection menu and select Dial-Up Server
3. Click Allow Caller Access
4. Leave the default Server Type settings like this:
Server Type: Default
Advanced Options:
[X] Enable Software Compression
[X] Require encrypted password
Note: The server will run on the task bar as a ?blue screen?,
clicking on it will bring the monitor window back up if you
accidentally click OK.
Connect to the Dial-Up Server with the other machine (this is the
CLIENT machine):
1. Double click My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking
2. Double click on the new NASCAR 3 connection
Note: Some times you may need to connect 3, 4 or even 5 times before
this is successful. Be patient and try again.
Start and then immediately Exit NASCAR 3 on both machines before
continuing. I can?t explain it but this seems to make everything more
stable once you start racing. I?m sure it has no bearing but that is
how I always do it.
The machines will be connected when the Server Status changes from
Monitoring to ?UserName? Connected Since ?Time?. Once this happens
the two machines are connected with the IPX Protocol via Dial-Up
Networking and it is time to start racing.
1. Insert the NASCAR Racing 3 CD-ROM into the drive (it is
required for Multiplayer racing)
2. Start NASCAR Racing 3
3. Select Driver Info and change to the Multi List then click
Exit
4. Select Multiplayer
5. Have the HOST machine Host an IPX Network Race and have the
CLIENT machine Join an IPX Network Race
6. The Client should see the created game and be able to join
7. The Host should then see the Client connect
You should be off an running. Hopefully this will provide a much
stronger connection than you get with your ISP. It will take the
?middle man? ISP completely out of the picture greatly improving
performance.
I hope all this helps. I'm sure these steps won't work for everyone
(every computer has its own problems) but hopefully they will work for
most. If you have any problems I would make sure there is no other
software or hardware that might be conflicting. In some cases, but not
all, Ethernet cards can cause problems. The client computer name would
eventually come on but when they tried to "race" the client machine
would lock-up.
Cheers,
Chris
