You are absolutely right about GPL not being the greatest game just because
they say so.

"The reason it is the greatest game is just because IT IS."  *      ;o)

GPL doesn't have a realistic driving model. Too slippery wippery.

Ian, I agree with you that F12001 and probably 2002 (haven't played
the full version yet) are more realistic but I dunno if we're looking
at the same screenshots here.  I see a few things of interest:

1. A palette of colors that resembles what I see when I look outside,
instead of a video game.
2. That whole "ball of incandescent gas in the sky causing light to
reflect off of things" thing is pretty neato.
3. Whoa, locking brakes! (actually, I'm just saying that to be a
bastard =)

It's very unlikely I'll be buying GP4 (I'll be picking up F12k2
whenever my checks come, despite my reluctance to do so), but it's
certainly not on the quality of the screenshots.  Now the quality of
the driving is another thing...

it seems the people in here can only be 100% in favour of gp4 or 100%
against gp4...that really makes me wonder ;)
why don't you just pick your favourite game and go racing ?

Don't be silly! There's loads of grip, you just have to be skilful in
your driving technique to exploit it. I find GPL really easy to drive,
and I'm only an average pace driver.

Maybe there's something fundamentally wrong with the way you drive?

Maybe.

Or maybe even the developers admitted that its' wrong. Just like in N4 (but
not N2002). Some of us could see this immediately after the game was
released, and some others argued that it was correct up until about a year
ago. Some others still.............

Oh sorry, I forgot you only drive sims that are 100% accurate. Like EVO
4X4?

Difference in opinion then. I feel the trackside objects look so artificial
I'd be quite happy without them. They're not even close to being detailed.
On tree tracks the trees look like cardboard cutouts. Ie, flat textures
pasted onto a flat box. It's sufficient, like I said, but it sure doesn't
account for the performance hit as opposed to GP3 though. My GF3Ti200 can
run it just fine with everything at max on an empty track (in fact, CPU is
the limiter in my system, not the GPU), and I've been doing so just to peek
a view. Heck I didn't even notice a difference when I went back to my
regular (calibrated) graphical setup.

Didn't you just say with today's hardware it runs great with everything at
max? When GP2 came out you couldn't buy a machine able to run it at max. The
CPU needed didn't exist yet.

When GP3 was released it ran quite happily on medium/high-end computers with
everything at max.

GP4 will only run with everything at max on the best you can get in the
stores today. I don't see how the (supposedly) new graphical engine is so
improved it justifies that change in performance. It just doesn't look that
freakin' good compared to GP3.

Not true. I think it's got the best feel of the F1 games I've played. I just
think its limited new graphics sucks compared to the performance hit it's
taken over GP3. I also think it's ***to claim a game is as close to
reality as you can get, yet penalties are still dealt via instant cutoff in
engine power for x seconds. GP4 to me = GP3 fixed for XP and with some new
buzzwords added to its graphical merit. Not worthy of the number "4" but
rather 3.5.

'Iced up roads'?! Tell you what, son, try MS Train Simulator, I'm told
there's a 3rd party train racing track! Should suit you... no turning
required! ;)

BTW, GPL's not my favourite sim. Now back to the bottom of the pond with
you. <SNIDE GRIN>

Yes, we'll have to disagree ! I have my two systems side-by-side, and if I
start a race on GP3 on one, and GP4 on the other, the improvements are
immediately apparent.

And the fact that the tracks are modelled from GPS data in GP4 is also
evident, not just for the general circuit layout, but also for varying
surface width and altitude/camber changes throughout the lap.

Clearly I was referring to the sort of hardware in people's homes today.
(Much of which is far from current).
Also, the CPU doesn't exist yet to run GP4 at maximum either. There's an
enticing little "1600x1200" option there in the display settings :)

I had a high-end system back in summer 2000, (Athlon 1000 T'Bird/Voodoo5
5500) when GP3 was released, and I couldn't run at the max res of 1280x1024
with full fps and detail. I wasn't able to do this until I upgraded to an
Athlon 1400 T'Bird and GeForce3 (original version) almost 1 year later.

I disagree.

Johnny.

Shimmering.. you mean those flickering textures? Just like in F1 2001,
I still have those texture problems in F1 2002. Don't know if it's
something with my computer or if that's 'normal', but the textures
look quite ugly here while driving.

I tested the WIP demo thingie briefly, yes. I'll give it another go in time,
but it just felt so weird I didn't wanna have another go at it at the time.
Could just be that I've gotten too used to how GPx feels over the years, so
it deserves a second chance. Not to mention it ran perfectly smooth with
everything set to max, something GP4 ain't close to. It sure doesn't look
any worse either.
