GPL Off-Line Pre-Qualifying for League Races. How to do it ?

by Phillip McNell » Thu, 09 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi All,

I've been looking at different ways of running an online league we do
here in Australia.

Of the different methods one can use, the concept of pre-qualifying a
large group of drivers into various divisions for each race seems a
good idea to me. It seems to me this method is most likely to ensure
each group of racers are always driving with others around their own
times.

The trouble I have is ... I don't have the time available for a bunch
of on-line pre-qualifying sessions. In our case this would required at
least 4 sessions if not more, to accomadate all the drivers we have.
These would normally be division-ised into at least 4 seperate races
to fit everyone in.

I've been told there is a way of doing pre-qualifying off-line. This
sounds like a good idea in our case. It is essential of course that
all such submitted times are tamper proof. If there is a way to do
this with complete integrilty I'd appriciate someone pointing the
method out to me.

Best Regards

Phillip McNelley

Hmm... UK GPL league got everyone to send in the player.ini file (I
think it was that one) with all their fast laps and put people into
divisions based on best lap times.

[Sure, I guess someone _could_ cheat and get into a league ahead
of where they're meant to be - but what good would it do?  You'd be
in a division where you were outclassed then.]

It seemed to work OK although a few people shifted divisions after the
first race.

Any of the UK GPL moderators like to comment on the exact system used?

The cheat would just the opposite, to get into a league that was below
your skill level and cherry pick the wins.

That's one of the problems. The other is that drivers who are really
too slow for an ellite group want to see how they go up against the
fast guys.

The off-line system that someone half discribed to me went something
like ...

Each driver had to save a few seconds of the replay from their session
when they crossed the line and/or as their pit board was in view. This
should be a tamper proof way of proving that they did get the lap time
they say they did.

However ... The prospect of checking through 60+ replays doesn't
thrill me though :-)  as you might imagine. The prospect of just
recieving 60+ GPL replays in my e-mail each week doesn't thrill me
either :-)

Can anyone see a problem with his method ? It their an esier way of
doing this ? Do the pitboards show up in replays anyway ? I'll have to
check this.

Cheers

PM

Well where's the satisfaction in that?  Besides which any system of
qualifying or pre-qualifying is surely susceptible to people driving
"too slowly".

Perhaps I'm just to honest to "get it"?

Phillip, the VROC-F2 Club uses the same servers that are going to be used
for the "division" races to do online pre-qualifying. We've usually got
drivers to come close to two full fields. We leave pre-qual for a chat
group meeting where the field splitting lap time is announced, and then
folks go to their assigned server for their division race. Seems to work
fine.
