More ORIGINAL INDY 500 times (how 'bout a contest?)

: As was recommended by several people, I hooked up my Flightstick Pro
: joystick and drove the car that way.  Man!  What a difference!  I
: immediately improved on my best hop-lap speed by 1.5mph (was 233.64mph)

Made a helluva difference when I tried it!

: After further tweaking the chassis setup, and practicing my lines with my
: new "performance peripheral" I can post the following times:

: - Best "hot lap" time (made in the practice session):
: 37.55sec  239.68mph

: - Best Pole qualifying speed (four lap average):
: 37.82sec  237.96mph

Best "hot lap" time (made in the qualifying session)
0:37.35sec  241.35mph

That lap was done with the car running on vapours. With 5 gals in the tank,
it usually runs 240.00 times. The tyres don't last long either!

And yes, I *did* do the hot lap in the car damaging qualifying session!

OK OK, before you all start screaming, here's the setup:

      Chassis:  Lola Buick

   Front wing:  0
    Rear wing:  0

      Stagger:  +1.00 inch

      4th gear:  3.40

  left/front roll bar: full forwards
  right/rear roll bar: full backwards

                            0=soft
                            8=firm
         Tyres    Camber    Shocks

    RF     med    -0.75       4
    RR    soft    +0.00       6
    LR    soft    +1.00       6
    LF    soft    +0.25       4

I reckon that I could get faster lap if I figured out asymmetrical
suspension setups!

To drive the car, you need to turn in early and let the car drift around
the turns. If you don't have a joystick, you may find that this setup is
too understeery. Even with a joystick, be prepared to hit a lot of walls.

I was able to match the speed, although I think you may have the
elaspesed time incorrectly indicated.   I ran a 241.35 and the time was
37.29sec.

I sat on the pole with a 239.xx average (I keep forgetting to write this
down.)

We should now see who can get the fastest four lap pole speed.   In
essence, our own Internet run-for-the pole contest!

I will inidcate my setup below Dr. J's.

All this was the same for my setup.  With no wings, you can't get four
laps on the 3.50 rear gears.  The motor blows after about 3 hot laps.
(then again, the Buick V-6 theoretically doesn't make any power over
9200rpm anyway....:)

My 'bars were set a little differently.  I'm running the rear bar about
halfway "out" and the front bar a little farther out than the rear.
Thus, I've built some additional rear roll-stiffness into the car to get
it to turn in better.

My setup is as follows:

                                            0=soft
                                            8=firm
         Tires    Pressure(cold)  Camber    Shocks

    RF     med       24            -0.5        4
    RR    soft       25            +0.25       6
    LR    soft       24            +1.25       7
    LF    soft       24            +1.00       5

My suspension setups seems to be a bit more forgiving, and allows me to
turn 240mph laps with more than 5 gallons of fuel in the tank.  Hell I
could run it this way all day, if I could keep the motor together.
(running a higher gear seems to drop lap times down just a bit)

You can't get too asymmetrical....we're not racing Super Modifieds here.
:)

walls.

My setup favors neutrality.  At speed, it has good initial turn-in.
Optimum tire temp on the right front is about 285F with the medium
compound.  If you can keep this tire happy, you're going to cut a fast
lap.  Of course, it all depends on what line you take. If you blow an
entry, you end up cooking the right front, and at these speeds, you just
end up pushing out and kissing the wall at the corner exit.  The car is
also real nervous at about 175 mph in the turns.  At this speed, the car
is in the "transitional phase" where the downforce really begins to make
it stick.  Thus, it is real easy to spin out.  I sometimes loop the
car and wreck with this setup on my cool-down lap after qualifying.

Email me if you want to do more bench/computer/racing.
