Help request.....Driving instruction at Watkins Glen.

I've not driven NASCAR much, and not at all good at it.

Being a UK type, ovals are of limited interest, hence this is by
far the most interesting track in the basic game for me. I'd appreciate
some advice on the specifics of driving/tuning a car here.

I've been using the Ace setup essentially, but I found it WAY too tail-
happy even when I just backed off the throttle, let alone on the brakes
when it almost invariably let go and spun me off. Thus, to keep it as
neutral as possible :-

RF   49 psi    100%    Stagger 0
RR   50         50     Spoilers  3.5"   70 degrees     Left 1750 50%
LR   50         50     Wheel-lock  15 degrees          Rear 1700 48.5%
LF   49        100     Gears   9.8 / 7.0 / 5.0 / 4.2   Cross 0 lbs  50%

My best laps have been 107 to 108 mph, with a full tank I can run
(fairly) consistantly above 105 mph.

Thinking through a fast lap...... I'm in top, flat out down the pit
straight, and start braking just when the right-hand barrier becomes
blue. I get through the corner with a slight squeal of tires in 2nd, and
rapidly get up into 3rd up the hill. I may or may not flick into top,
but back off/brake slightly to take the left-right-left in third. This
certainly has the car sliding and squealing, and if I'm a tad too fast
or get the line wrong I'm bouncing off the walls. If I get it right I'm
clearing the hill-top and on the power at the apex of the last right-
hander to take me up into top for the straight. I brake at the first of
the red count-down marker boards to go through the chicaine in first. I
enter the next right-hander in 2nd, with the revs at about 7500 and hold
this until the corner opens out when I can exit in third (if I change up
earlier I find I either go too fast and understear off the apex into the
dirt, or bog the engine loosing accelaration onto the straight). In top,
full speed down the back straight, again I brake at the first of the red
marker boards on the right, going down to second gear for the corner,
but rapidly up again to third for a moment, but briefly on the brakes
and back down to second to get a fast exit from the final corner onto
the pit straight.

Is this car setup hopelessly flawed in some place.....or am I getting
any corners completely wrong? Anyone got any thoughts on how to improve
my times at all?

If anyone out there could offer me some constructive help.....yes, I
know about practice, no substitue for putting in laps, and following the
computer cars, and I know some people think their setup is incredibly
personel but who knows, my driving style might be very similar to yours
or by driving your setup I might learn how to drive the track/car
better.....I'd really appreciate the advice (privately or openly).

Cheers!

P.S. - although I'm always bottom qualifier (with others qualifying
over 110 mph - opponents 90%), in practice and races I pass quite a few
and only seem to be passed when I botch it.....why is this?

Oh I don't know about that. I used to be the same with Indycar (Laguna
Seca - what a course; the ovals? Hmmm), but for some reason I haven't
got into the road courses in Nascar. The ovals are very exhilarating
when you're in the thick of it I've found. Now, on the other hand, a
break from the ovals when F1GP][ hits the streets will be a good thing
too!

Stuart.
