anyone know how to configure a joystick and wheel to a splitter cable? I
have them hooked up, and the wheel works but can't get the computer to
recognize the joystick unless I plug it in to the other cable. I am running
windows 98 and plugging in to the sound card.

The problem with (or benefit of) modern *** devices is that very often have
more than 2-axes and 2-buttons. In order to put two devices on one port the
first device can use only axes X1 and Y1 and switch 1 and 2 and the second
device axes X2 and Y2 and switch 3 and 4. Most wheels have four buttons using
switches 1, 2, 3 and 4 leaving no switches for a second device. Additionally,
many wheels use (or can use) axis Y2 for independant braking and acceleration
and some even use axis X2 for a clutch.
Older DOS games can be fooled to get around this but I've never managed to do
it in Windows Control Panel.
Cheers,
Paul

I had a similar problem not too long ago....my solution was to buy an
joystick extension cable and just swap the joystick and wheel whenever I
needed to.  The downside to this is that you have to re-load the device in
the Game Controllers control panel and then recalibrate, but that doesn't
typically take too long.

I want an extension.  Where did you get yours?

I found you don't need to recalibrate.  It only needs to be calibrated once.
Just choose the new controller and your done.  Make a shortcut on your
start menu (right click the start button) or desktop for really quick changes.

I spent $30 CAD on a splitter from Creative Labs (same manufacturer as
my sound card).  The splitter I bought in stores just didn't work.  Don't
expect the wheel to work if it uses more than 2 axis, or the axis are on
different 'joystick ports'.  Only 2 buttons will work per controller as well.

I use the splitter for playing arcade games like NHL '96 and such.

CompUSA.  About ten bucks as I recall.  But I did have to stare at the
wall of cables for about ten minutes before I found it hiding there.

I know how to do it but its complicated and u have to make one yourself.  The
switch would flip a set of 15 contacts to hit the 15 pins on the Joystick (or
wheel).  I know how to do it and im working on one right now.  I cant however
be sure this works till i finish it.  Probably in a month or two (not alot of
spare time lately).  Anyone have any advice or suggestions it would be
appreciated.

I have multiple joysticks and was forced to plug and unplug when I needed to
change them. I found a switchbox on the net and it works great. All I have
to do now is reach up and switch to what joystick I need. You also have to
change the joystick in the control panel but CH Products has a little
program that sits in your tray and all you have to do is right click on it
and select your joystick. It's allot faster and easier than opening the
joystick panel, removing..etc..etc.......

Well, I got the CH utility from their download page (QuickJoy is the name
for anyone interested) and it is great!  It is very nice to be able to
switch joysticks with 2 mouse clicks and a little cable swapping.

What knd of switch boxes are people using?  Any suggestions?  I would love
to be able to quit swapping the cables aropund also!

Anybody know of plans for do-it-yourself switchbox?

Thanks in advance,
Charlie

I found a manual switchbox on the net. Can't quite remember where though. It
is like the printer switchboxes you find at all the stores with the knob on
the front. The one I found was for joysticks or Macintosh monitors (15 pin I
think). Search around and you can find it at a couple places. I'll look
around for my receipt.

AFAIK, there are two options.  There is Lead Pursuit's JoySwitch (which I've

website) which I've seen at MicroCenter and CompUSA.  I have a JoySwitch and it
works very well - though I mostly have USB these days.  To say the QuickJoy
program is great just doesn't do it justice - if you have multiple controllers,
it's a must!

I'm using CH's SwitchBox - has connections for four separate controllers
along with the QuickJoy utility you mention.  The SwitchBox is great.
You just press one of the controllers buttons to make it active and then
use the QuickJoy utility to tell Windows which joystick config file to
use.

I tried one of the cheap automatic switchboxes but they never worked right
with the wheel. The wheel tended to drift while I played. Don't know about
the CH switchbox, might not drift with it.
