It's like this.  I've been staring at this 14" monitor for 3 years now
and would like to know if everybody out here thinks now is the time to buy
another monitor.
In other words, I think I'm in the market for a 19 incher now and would
love being able to justify it by screaming "Peer pressure made me do it!" to
my wife.

    Keep in mind, I could buy a new MB (i.e 350 to 400) or a couple o'
Voodoo 2's.  What's my next move?

Decisions decisions....

Yes!!!  It is time to upgrade.  I only had a 14" monitor for 2 years, could
not believe the difference a 17" monitor made.  As far as your wife goes,
do what I did. Cut the monitor off, and swear that it must have burned up.
That is the only way I could justify a bigger monitor.  :)   Funny thing
is, the 14" monitor works just fine on the kids computer, "must have reset
itself"  hehehe

I have a 17" monitor on my computer, a 15" at work and a 14" on my kids
computer so I get to look at the various sizes on a daily basis. The 17"
is THE BEST investment I have made to date, some of which include a 3dfx
card, new MB, 200mhz cpu w/mmx, 64 meg ram, etc, etc. I do mostly
graphical work and *** and I couldnt believe the difference only 3"
could make. If you can afford the 19" GO FOR IT! Believe me, you wont
regret it.

The new Viewsonics are very nice, and are about the best you can get.
What I like is the non-galre screens (slightly frosted to keep any
reflections to a minimum). You might also check out the MAG monitors.
Not as nice as a Viewsonic IMHO, but easier on the pocketbook as the
screen-size goes up.

BTW, Viewsonic also has a "generic-brand" that I've seen at Fry's
Electronics...can't recall the name, however.

Cheers!

I went with a 21" Nokia, up from a 17" Nanao.  Save your money,
get the biggest nice monitor you can afford.

IMHO, check out also any Trinitron-based monitor (Sony).  They are very
good, but you will pay a little more for quality.  Around 1000$ for a 17'.

Anything with a pitch over 0.25 isn't a good choice, but a .26 can be a good
choice if you can't afford lower pitch.

Personally, a 19 incher is nice, but once you get used to it, you don't
notice the difference much other that you can run in 800X600 constantly,
which gives you a better picture.  I'd go for the motherboard if you got the
dough, then the voodoo2.

Costs as much or more than two seperate cards though, the last time I
checked.

Yes!  Most definitely!  Going with a nice 17" monitor over a 14"'er is
a *BIG* difference... and one "investment" WELL worth the $$$s!!!
Of course,  I'm sure going with a decent 19" or larger monitor would
be an even better overall buy these days for the longer term! :)

You can also use "eye-strain" (and related eyesight/health issues) as
a good "excuse" for justification for making this puchase! :)

As others have also mentioned... I also agree wholeheartedly with...
go with a good, quality monitor with .26 dot pitch or better if
possible... you won't be sorry!  It'll cost a little more, but well
worth it in the "big picture"! ;)

Sony, Viewsonic... MAG for 'econo'... all excellent choices IMHO.

Bottom line... you've received a bunch of replies now... so let your
peers here on 'r.a.s.' pressure you into this buying decision for you!
BUY! BUY! BUY! <g>
(now that was an easy decision, wasn't it?)

The original poster stated that he was looking at a pare of
Voodoo 2s.  So he was already going to spend for two.  This
will save him a slot.  I prefer the connection between the two
VooDoos be a set of short runs on a circuit board than a
ribbon connector between two boards.

It needn't be the big bucks you may think to afford a 19" monitor either!
I scanned the 2nd hand market and found my NEC5D 20" monitor for a fraction
of new price.  Monitors remember don't get superseded at anything like the
rate
of other PC bits and pieces.  An older monitor can still be in perfect order
even
when the rest of its system is old hat.

So my advice is to take a look at big monitors on the second hand market,
you
may still have enough left over for other items such as your Voodoo 2!

says...

If your video card has enough ram to support the resolution and color depth you
want to run (i.e. you have a 4 meg card), then definately get the bigger
monitor. Using Windows95 or any other graphical OS at high res on a big
screen is great, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. Also, monitor
prices don't really change that much over time, whereas in 6 months that
Voodoo2 card may have significantly dropped in price (we all know how that
goes, ugh.) So the new monitor is also a good investment. And as for your
wife, you need to find something on the computer that _she_ likes to do. After
you get her hooked, maybe she'll be the one asking for upgrades. :)

Wait! There's a UK-Japanese colaboration that's produced a bit os plastic that
can be used for screens. They've got it working on 3x3inch in monochrome so far
(well, in February they had so they've probably done better now) and they knew
how to get it in colo(u)r, it's just a matter of developement now. As it's very
cheap and produces to glare (no glass) it should be worth the wait of about a
year.

No dead pixels like the flat screens either :o)
