If we'd saved our money and bought a REAL race car!!!

Just had an overwhelming thought:  Had I saved the money I've spent over the
years on sims and the hardware to run them, what kind of REAL car could I
have bought?  Bear with me...

Since 1990 (as far as I can remember):
Dell 386sx 33            $1099
Indy500                        40ish
IndyCar Racing            $49
Joystick                        $29
Homebuilt P200 (32mb!)   $2100 ouch - but a 2X CD Rom!
First TM wheel (T2)    $149
IndyCar Racing 2          $49
NASCAR Racing          $49
Track Expansion             $39
Cirrus Logic 4mb card   $100
SB PRO                        $129
NACAR Racing 2         $50
Rendition Verite            $199
BGN Expansion             $30
Homebuilt P2 266        $1400
Canopus Pure3D           $199
CART Precision Racing $50
Grand Prix 2                $49
TM NASCAR wheel     $119
Homebuilt Celeron 266o/c ed to 400mhz $850
SLI-ed Canopus Pure3dII (x2!)  $500
SCGT                            $49
Viper Racing                $49
(4 NFS games)            $200

Altec Lansing ACS48s 2x $300
15" Mag                        $250
17"CTX                        $189
NASCAR Racing 3        $49
CTS for NR                    $39
GPL (!)                           $49
19"CTX                        $649
P3 600                           $700
TM NASCAR FF        $150
NASCAR Heat            $49
F1 2000                        $49
F1 2001                        $49
Homebuilt 1800+XP    $1100
F1 2002                        $29
21"IBM                        $870

Whew!  If you got this far, I'm sorry - I'm sure you can all relate though.
I've missed about 20 other sims(racers) - say, at 50 a piece, $1000!  Total
it up, it's roughly $13,500.  Had I put that in a Certificate of Deposit at
6%, it'd be worth $24,523 today!!!!!  Ugghh.  That'd buy a good used Supra
or fair Shelby Cobra Kit -

But then again, I would have missed locking myself in my office for 5 hours
at a time driving an imaginary car around imaginary tracks against imaginary
competition...

What about you?

Try maintaining an amateur racecar for 13 years.

You forget how much it costs to maintain a racing car, repair a racing car,
pay entry fees, insurance, and best off all - how to pay for it all when you
break both your legs in a crash and have 5 months off work

Some anonymous wiseman said "NEVER add up the price of your hobbies".

At one time, not too many years ago, I was living in a one bedroom
apartment with enough money invested in dirt bikes to easily afford
the down payment on a 4 bedroom house and furnish it.
Any responsible person would tell me I was a fool, but they were the
happiest days of my life.

BTW, if computers and games are your only vice, you are very thrifty!

Tim (dirt bikes, home theater, radio controlled airplanes, 4wd trucks,
computers... I'm feeling ill).

Nice topic. Too bad *some* of the RAS girls see fit to "put you in your
place" with their real world sports car tales of woe and, as usual,
completely miss the point by friggin' miles. Say's something about their
finances if they can afford the luxury of both hobbies, eh ?

Well after playing racing sims for years I went out and bought a real race
car 3 years ago - a Late Model Stock car.  It cost me $75,000 to turn the
first lap and averages about $1,500 everytime I take it to the track.  I had
to buy the car, trailer, tools, pit wagon, upgrade my truck to pull the
trailer.  Believe me it's a LOT cheaper on a computer.  I don't care what
class of racing you get into - it's VERY EXPENSIVE.

If you'll recall, CD rates in the 90's mirrored the economy..that is...UP.
Want to faint, think back to the rates in 1979 - you were a fool with a
market rate CD of less than 17%!!!

BTW, my rates (State Farm) are 4.11 on a 5yr CD today.  Find out what yours
is doing and give me a call! ;)
