GP2: No sound? No split axis?

by Tim Vanhe » Tue, 14 Mar 2000 04:00:00

As everyone's hypeing up GP3 i couldn't resist and I installed GP2 again.
Everything was great: 2000 carkit complete with Irvines new ugly helmet,
Indy,... heck, it even runs fast! <G> Only one little problem: no sound. I
have a Aureal Vortex A3D sound card and it seems like GP2 doesn't recognize
it.
Any advice on that would be very very appreciated!
Oh and it seems like I can't get my split axis pedal recognized too. Is it
possible to do that?

gp3 is a dos game.  You have to have your aureal dos drivers loaded
then you have to make sure the irq setting for the soundcard is within
the area that gp2 recognizes.  Most games as old as gp2 do not
comprehend plug and play settings so you have to manually alter the
irq's of possibly several hardware items to match up with what gp2 can
handle.  Your safest bet with a soundcard setting is irq5 then 3 & 1
I'm bland what the last two # represent...dma is one...
once you have your soundcard set to 5,3,1 and have no conflicts in
device manager, which means if you moved the soundcard irq to something
like 5 but plug and play had another card at irq5 then you have to
adjust that 2nd card as well, giving it whatever irq pnp had first
assigned the soundcard.
good luck

I have got an Aureal Vortex A3D card as well and I had the same problem
a few weeks ago when I reinstalled GP2. At first I couldn't get the
sound to work either, but I did get it going eventually but I can't
remember exactly what I did that fixed it :-( So it  should definitely
work. Are you running it in Windows or in a DOS box? I think I got it
working by running it in Windows. As for the split axis pedals, I've got
a MSFF wheel and no matter what I have tried I can't get it to calibrate
with split axis.

I have MS FF too, split axis works really fine, are you sure you have
checked Seperate pedals on MS Sidewinder Profile program.

Yeah, I made a new profile for GP2 but I can't get it to recognise the
split axis at all. It's a few weeks since I did it but I think when I
tried to calibrate it in the game, I got movement in one direction from
one pedal but not the other. How did you do it?

I only check seperate pedals option on MS Profile and then i start GP2 and
going to config my steering wheel on GP and check CONTROL DRIVEN CALIBRATION
option on.Then throttle to(joystick a or joystick b and axis for them, don't
remember now what they are, X or Z)then brake to another axis what throttle
is, when you calibrate your gas go up and brake goes left(that red ball on
calibration). It works fine when you do it right.

GP2: No sound? No split axis?

...

I'm not the original responder, but I have the MSFF working as well
(under W95).
I have separate axis on. And in GP2, I use the lowers joystick B axis
onscreen (don't know which one it is). So joystick A is left-right +
gas, joystick B, the 2nd entry axis is the brakes.
However, I strongly have the feeling that it really isn't right like
this, since I need to hold the gas and throttle halfway at the end of
the axis calibration, otherwise it will say 'not enough range'. So I'm
afraid it will only give throttle when I press the pedal at least to
half of its range. Same for the brakes.

But it works and I can keep the wheels from spinning while going full
throttle. It was quite great, a GP2 rerun! Only now are CPUs fast
enough to give the game its real feel. Hope that's not the case with
GP3.

The manual that came with my TSW2 wheel has a setup guide for GP2 that
says to turn on the Control Driven Calibration option. Before I turned
it on, I was getting those same 'not enough range' errors on the gas and
brake. Turning it on fixed the problem for me.
