Soundcard Driver Question

by Dave St.Ong » Tue, 02 May 2000 04:00:00

I recently purchased a Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer soundcard, and installed
it.  In the process, I had to disable my computer's existing Crystal
soundcard, and now I have hard crashes, where I have to turn off the power
bar, every once in a while.   Basically, while looking around for drivers,
all I could find were generic drivers for all Soundblaster Live! cards, and
I'm curious as to whether there were different drivers for the X-Gamer,
Diamond and the other Live! cards, or just one driver for all of the cards.
I went to the soundblaster website, but couldn't see any info to tell me
otherwise.

System specs:
400 mhz pentium
96 mb ram
Voodoo 3 2000
Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer
10 gig HD

You need to dl and install the SB Live 3.1 Liveware package which is about
28mb.  You can dl in packets though.  Many people have had problems with
various games until doing this.  Available from SBLIVE site.

Or if you don't want to download such a big file, you can download just the
drivers without the new software.  The latest drivers are called
sbl9xdrv1199.zip and are 5 MB.   And yes, all the Live cards share the same
drivers.

Yeah, I disabled it in the bios, and now it says "Crystal Chipset Cannot be
Found".  I downloaded the driver "sbl9xdrv1199.zip, and installed it.
However, when I go into the properties for the "Device
Manager>Sound,Video,Game Controllers>Soundblaster Live, and then check the
driver properties, it shows 8-26-99, even though it should be updated with
the driver from November....

Hmmmm...broke the golden rule..NEVER buy a MOBO with a built in soundcard,
my guess is windows is detecting the crystal soundcard AND the live!
and thus crashes........
try to remove the soundchip from your MOBO, it should be in a small slot of some
kind...this might work

There should be a way to disable the on-board audio, either using the BIOS
or a jumper/switch on the mobo.

Funny, on mine(see other thread), I disabled the USB port in BIOS, since I
don't have any usb devices.  However, Win95 keeps FINDING the damn thing!
That's not the first time I've seen that happen.  Is win95 just psychic?<g>
Ponderous...
