If you don't have the current version (1.05 from the disks,
either the ICR game or expansion disks; or 1.04 if you ftp'd
the update (don't ask me why you can't ftp 1.05), then get
the 1.04 update. It has an accelerate feature for exactly this
purpose.
If your disks do have version 1.05, you should have gotten a little
addendum to the manual which explains this.
Well, probably it has to do with what happens in real qualifying.
Normally you run a different setup in qualifying than during the race,
because you want max speed for a short period in qualifying,
compared to endurance during the race. This effect is simulated
with the computer cars. If you are not qualifying with a minimum
amount of fuel and the softest tires you can, then do so!
You could also run a less conservative setup in qualifying, since
you need to make a fast lap; it doesn't matter if you go off
the course a couple times during qualifying if you still have
just a single really fast lap. Obviously this strategy is not
the same during a race!
