Misc: having 'puter problems

by Lisa and J » Wed, 10 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I'm having problems with my 'puter here recently.  I was running Indy on
ICR2 and after about 5-10 laps of practice (IF I'm lucky...), the 'puter locks
up.  So, I rebooted the thing, and went to N2.  I'm running a 30-lap race at
N. Wilkesboro, and  - BAM - same thing.  I thought, "OK, the only thing I did
was install the T/M ACM game card...", so I figured I'd uninstall it and see
what happens.  Well, no luck.  It's still doing it.
I'm running a P133, Matrox Mystique, ESS AudioDrive 1688 (which is also my
joystick port, but had no problems with it until now), ThrustMaster T2 w/
pedals.  I had absolutely no problems with it until after I installed the ACM
card.
  Any ideas....????

It is very possible that when you opened your case and inserted the ACM
card you may have loosened something in the machine.  I would go back
and make sure all of your cards, simms, and other chips are securely
seated.  If this does not cure the problem, find some software to do a
thorough test of your memory chips.  Error in memory chips sometimes
cause this type of problem.  It sounds as if the replay file is hitting
a bad location in memory and thus freezing the computer.

Just a few thoughts...

Are you running it through Win95? If so, try changing the
screen saver to 'none'. My computer locks up as well if
I have the screen saver turned on. Don't know why, just
happens.

Try playing the sim from dos--my N2 locks after about 35 laps in
W95.

Another thought comes to mind.  Maker sure that you do not have any of
the powersaving options turned on in your BIOS.  It just could be that
your system is shutting down, since it hasn't seen any keyboard or mouse
input.  When this happens and the sim is running the computer usually
just hangs.
