Hi guys...

During the Le Mans race (Go Tom Kristensen), one of the danish
commentators, claimed that on some tracks in CART you drive with
AVERAGE lap speeds over 400 km/h (238 mph).

As an average speed this sounds a little fast to me.
What is the fastest AVERAGE lap speed in CART, and on which track??

A content Danish guy :-)

The pole at Fontana last year (Scott Pruett) was 235.398 mph (average).
Best Lap during the race was 230.190 mph. Trap speeds were over 240 mph.

Your right, it was Mauricio Gugelmin on pole with  240.942 in 97, fast race lap
Greg Moore (RIP) at 236.388.

400 km/h is in fact 248 mph.

I didn't really care if it was on ovals or road courses.
I was just interested in the fastest lap speed.

Thanks for the answers guys

(isn't a mile 1680 meters, Toni?)

I beleive it is possible at Michigan and Fontana.  If they were to run a
current CART car at Indy, you might also get speeds around this, too.

On the converted C***te track under ICR2 I've run laps of around
250....but that was with the GTP carset.....

I'd be really suspect of times produced on converted tracks.  Most of ICR2
was a fudge...they built the track etc and then spent a good deal of time
fiddling with various variables to acheive times that were similar to the
real world times...(if my memory serves correctly)
