Note that he didn't say 'the most realistic'. He said 'the best', and
in my book one big part of a racing... game's greatness is decided by
its accessibility. GPL certainly doesn't fare well in that cathegory.

Will it ever ????
Agree GP2 is the best racing "GAME" ever, but GPL is the best racing
"SIMULATION" ever............

GPL is the best driving Simulation ever.
GP2/TOCA2 (i prefer toca2) is the best RACING simulation ever.

Yes! I hope GP3 is GP2 + 3dfx + random weather + Calender & carset editor
for year selected) etc
That would be super........... GPL is ok also (different is its own way)

I don't know, the racing in GPL is pretty damn sweet. It simulates driving
-and- racing better than anything I've seen. TOCA has more action packed
races and I guess to many people it's considered more fun because of this,
but it's way out on actually simulating what top flight racing is about IMHO.
I'll amend this, I think - TOCA simulates nicely the 5 minute highlights of a
particularly shoddy BTCC event...

I hear this a lot. It's not a point of view I particularly agree with (mind
you I've not played GP for a -long- time), but I'm interested in what other
people's definition of 'racing' is - in the automobile sense of the word, of
course.
For me, in the simplest terms, the object of a race is to be the first person
to get to the checkered flag (well, duh). The thing is, there is -so- much
more to it than that. You've got a bunch of drivers at a similar level,
driving cars that have fairly close performance. As Murray Walker so often
says, catching up is one thing, getting past is another matter altogether.
If, when racing, you want constant ding dong battles, games that artificially
bunch up cars and alter performance characteristics as you go offer more fun
- more dicing (I'm -not- suggesting GP does this, BTW). If, on the other
hand, you want an idea of what racing drivers -actually- have to deal with -
driving a car on the limit, trying keep lap times up to catch that guy who's
running 1.5s up the road but 0.2s a lap slower than you, while trying to be
defensive to keep the dude who's 1s back and distracting you in your
mirrors... Got to be GPL for me. Miss that braking point because you were
distracted momentarily by the stricken Lotus and your race hopes go up in
smoke. That's a sim. Needs utmost concentration and in, IMHO is utterly
absorbing.
But, hey, that's me!
