SCGT: Conflict between MAS files and Microsoft Access 2000

by Larr » Mon, 15 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I am probably behind the times and this has probably been reported before,
but I have discovered a conflict between Access 2000 and Sports Car GT.

It seems that MS has decided to take the *.MAS extension for itself before
checking to see if anyone was using it.  They were.  Sports Car GT.

I had to delete the *.MAS assignment for Access 2000 or all of my MAS files
showed up as some sort of funky Access 2000 shortcuts to some kind of
external procedure.

FWIW...

Did it affect the function of the game, or did it just list them as another
file type when you look at the files?  Unless you could launch SCGT by
double clicking one of the .mas files, then it probably doesn't matter.
SCGT will still load the file with the same name, no matter what you
associate it with.

It would be amusing to try and load an SCGT .mas file into Access, though,
just to see what you get....

No, I didn't try to load them into access :)

I usually fix file association problems right away, so I didn't try SCGT
first.  I can't stand File Association problems :)

Where's the Mac when you need it?

If it doesn't affect the way the game runs, it really isn't a *problem*, is
it?  Like I said, SCGT doesn't care what program the file is associated with
unless you could launch an SCGT session by double clicking a *.mas file.
You could associate .htm files with Notepad and it wouldn't prevent your web
browser from displaying them when they were loaded, would it?  Of course
not.

Relegated to the tiny 5% of market share is so richly earned by being inbred
and provincial.

A little known feature is that you can hold down the shift key as you right click
on a selected file.  This will add "Open With" to the menu.  You can then select a
program to open the file.  If you want this to be a permanent feature, check the
box.  Often you do not - for example, if you want to edit an html file in Wordpad
or Notepad.  You probably don't want to change the file association (so that double
clicking the file will still open the file in your browser).

I did know about this and use it often.

IMHO if you aren't using notepad to edit it, *you* aren't writing web pages,
but that's another story...

There are a couple of other doodads along these lines that are useful as
well.

Under View|Folder Options|File Types, you can create new actions for any
file type, including being opened with different programs.  If you
frequently wish to open .htm files in notepad, add an 'Open with Notepad'
item and it will always be there on the right click menu without the extra
keypress.

Likewise, you can just put a shortcut to any program in the
C:\Windows\Sendto folder and that will cause the right click 'Send To' menu
to contain another quick way to do this.  For instance, I have a shortcut to
Photoshop in there, so right-clicking any graphic allows me to choose to
send it to Photoshop for editing, while ACDSee remains the default action
for viewing.  There is also a shortcut to my wife's desktop on my LAN so I
can send links and graphics I make for her and other nonsense there, easily.

Windows does lots of things that a lot of users (including the MS bashers)
don't take time to learn about.

SCGT: Conflict between MAS files and Microsoft Access 2000

I'm a software engineer and at my last job I had to write a shell namespace
extension for writing CD-R / CD-RW.  A shell namespace extension is basically a
registered folder (like "My Documents" in Windows 98) that once you enter it in
Explorer,  a registered DLL gets launched and communicates with the framework
through COM.  Your DLL then has to implement and handle everything that you see in
Explorer (if you want it to behave like a normal folder). We wanted to make it
transparent to the user so that he or she could drag and drop files to be written
to CD into this folder (a staging area) and then do all the normal file activities
on them (open, run, play, send to, rename, etc).  I basically had to rewrite all of
Explorer from scratch!  I ended up learning more arcane things about Explorer that
I would have never come across as a normal user.
