I just downloaded the devrt101.ace file which will in theory allow me to
play Rally Trophy patched to 1.01 without the CD (which I own). The file is
supposed to be executable and contains a replacement executable for the game
as far as I know. Trouble is, I haven't a clue what to 'open' the file
with!! Am I doing something wrong?

All help gratefully received.

.ace files are archives, like .rar or .zip. WinRAR will happily open .ace
files and let you extract the contents. Download a free shareware version of
WinRAR (do a google search) and you should be fine.

Ace is the archive file, kinda like a "Zip" file if that helps. Get
something like WinAce to extract it to the Rally Trophy directory and then
you'll end up with a file called "Rally Trophy.exe". It will also ask to
overwrite the existing .exe if you've done it right. Then everything should
work.

Files of .ace format annoy the hell out of me. There's no need, nor excuse,
for PC files being distributed in this arcane format when everyone knows
that the zip format is the defacto standard.

I believe some people use it simply to be different. Or maybe annoying, I
don't know which.

Lucky you, you get to download yet another un-packer. WinRar (or is it
WinAce - I forget, and surely don't care)... Like you really needed another
one :)
