any problems for the most part. But N3 will just exit to the desktop without
an error every once in a while. It has only happened while practicing,
and 768/384 ADSL. Anyone else seen this?

I saw this happen a couple of times to me both in practice and in a
race (offline). I run a similar rig to you, with a 300 OC'd to 450 and
a V3 2000, Win98 with second editon updates. I ended up getting the
latest win98 certified drivers from the 3dfx website (9/9/99 I think,
I'm not on that machine right now) .
After installation I played N3 for 2 hours and GPL for 1 and had no
problems. Of course your mileage may vary..
Good luck.
What I have found is that if I host a race with no AI, or when I host a
race with a starting field that equals the max number of connections
(include AI), and if enough people join up to bump the last AI out of the
race, the server will crash back to the Windows desktop - guaranteed.
So see, it's not *always* a hardware issue.
