N3 exiting to desktop

I have been hosting Multiplayer races the past couple days and haven't had
any problems for the most part. But N3 will just exit to the desktop without
an error every once in a while.  It has only happened while practicing,

and 768/384 ADSL. Anyone else seen this?

Yes, it locks my whole computer up on the desktop

Kyle,

I saw this happen a couple of times to me both in practice and in a
race (offline). I run a similar rig to you, with a 300 OC'd to 450 and
a V3 2000, Win98 with second editon updates. I ended up getting the
latest win98 certified drivers from the 3dfx website (9/9/99 I think,
I'm not on that machine right now) .
After installation I played N3 for 2 hours and GPL for 1 and had no
problems. Of course your mileage may vary..

Good luck.

Not always Ed.  I have two systems this happens on, but only when the
machine is the server.  One machine is even running in software mode, so
heat isn't an issue.

What I have found is that if I host a race with no AI, or when I host a
race with a starting field that equals the max number of connections
(include AI), and if enough people join up to bump the last AI out of the
race, the server will crash back to the Windows desktop - guaranteed.

So see, it's not *always* a hardware issue.

I seriously doubt it is heat and it doesn't lock up my computer it justs
exits to the desktop and I can restart it. I have had the Celeron
overclocked since March without any problems. My system runs very cool
actually, I have four fans in the system including a slot fan next to the
V3, which is at the default speed.

But doesn't affect me.

And I don't run overclocked, FWIW.

I have my Voodo2's overclocked, I am going to set them to the default clock and
see if this helps.

Do you have a valid driver roster selected? My son erased mine and I got kicked
out to the desktop. After I created a new driver roster, everything was fine.

Its a bug in N3 ... you have to have at least 1 ai car in practice in the
pits...if not ...as soon as all HUMANS take up all avaliable slots it dumps
you into windoze. I host a server every night for 3 hours. If I have no ai or
less then the total allowed in the setup IT WILL DUMP. If I have more ai then
the Setup it runs fine. My System is a PIII 450, 256 megs ram, voodoo 3 3000,
cable modem. Nothing overclocked. 2 Case fans and a fan on the V3-3000.
so its NOT heat, and it is NOT speed.
