 ...................................................would be a way to
adjust the AI to a percentage level of competitive ability such as
there is in all the Papyrus sims up to now.

According to Allison Hine (on her web site) she states that the
subject came up, but was voted out because ----------------
--------------- These are the best drivers in the world and you are
ptiiting yourself against them --------------- or something to that
effect.

   Nice statement ------------------- wrong attitude!

If everyone wanted to go head to head against them at their skill
levels, that would be great, but I am sure there are many who are like
me, who like to set the AI levels to where the competition is hot and
heavy.  It really does not matter if I am setting a TRUE lap record in
the process.

Now if each box came with a certificate for a racing school to
learn chassis dynamics, and driving skill improvement, and the wizards
were able to program in a certain amount of "feel" you get as the cars
are losing traction, or feedback through the steeering wheel
...................................... etc   etc    etc.

Of course this is rediculious, and that is my point.

THESE DRIVERS WERE PROFESSIONALS WHO DID THIS FOR A LIVING, and
nothing else.   They didn't have :"day" jobs, then go out and test the
new BRM after work.

I think that for Sierra to leave out the percentage adjustment is a
major gaff.  There is a lot of people ( I included ) who will probably
NEVER race against the AI because it is so lopsided in it's outcome.

I got this because of the fact that my boyhood heros are featured,
and I like it, but I feel there are a lot of people who are not :DYED
IN THE WOOL" who will get VERY, VERY frustrated.

THAT ----------------------------------- is a shame.  And it could
have been avoided if common sense would have prevailed over the MACHO
BULLSHIT of someone who may have raced in his past and feels this is
the only way to go.

I certainly hope the same screw-up isn't in the new NASCAR 3.

I like GPL --------------- gives much enjoyment, but I will
probably only proctice forever with it -------------------------------
what a pisser!!!!

Im of the same opinion as the orignal poster, to leave out being able
adjust the A1 as in the orig***Papy sims is going to kill sales for
Papy I think, I love the game, Graphics, Cars, Tracks everything
but I have allready decided to take it back to the shop. I just cant
afford the time this sim would require from me to get really good at
it, then once I had I wouldnt be able to practice every night just to
stay there, It wouldnt have made the sim any lesser of a game if Papy
had put some A1 level adjustment sliders in here, all it would have
done was made the game more fun for those of us who are weekend
racers and like to at least see & jostle other cars at some tim on the
track, not just when they are laping us for the 5 time :(

Its a shame really it is that papy went this way and didnt listen to
its beta testers on the subject, its allready cost them about 3 sales
to some friends who used to race Nascar 2 with me as they feel the
same way as I do.

I have tried all the hacks too.

Hi Speedy, its not that I dont think I could get ok with this game,
its the fact I dont have the time that GPL would require to get up to
the level that Papy have set the A1 too, I play flight sims too but
also love carsims so my time gets split bettween them.  I would have
just thought it would have been a sensible thing off Paay to add a A1
adjustment slider for those guys who dont want to spend weeks getting
there times down to be able to adjust it so that in races they can at
least have some of the fun battles with the A1 cars like you could in
Indy2, Nascar2 & GP2. As it is its just much easier to boot up GP2 and

go for a quick 1 hour race with that at least I know I can catch some
of the A1 and have some raseing them, instead of just watching the A1
leave me for dust allthe time as they do in GPL.

I also think this would have helped sales for the game to other people
other than the *** simer which this game is aimed at, and that
would propbly amount to about 20-30% of the gameing community that
I know.

Hey Hotdog, Don't give up. If an older guy like me 51 this month can get
pole twice (1:30:12 & 1:30.23)and actually win a 9 lap race at monza, so
can you.

I'm a slightly less 'old' 40 and am only doing around 1:32.5 at Monza.
At this speed I am right right at the 'ragged edge' as they say. With
practice I am able to shave a tenth off here and a tenth there but
nowhere near fast enough to be competative with the big (AI) boys! After
a lap or two, the back markers are out of sight!

However, I am now enjoying some competitive racing by hacking
the gpl_ai.ini file as instructed on the excellent Alison Hine GPL
website. By setting the 'npt_override' variable from 0 (default) to 1.2
the lead cars are now lapping at about 1:37. I am now able to win races
if I drive very carefully.

I am very keen to know what you are doing to achieve these times
at Monza. Perhaps you could Email me a Hotlap or post one to a binary
NG!

The points being made that Papy should have put in an AI adjustment
slider I totally agree with. However, I am not moaning! Even without any
AI at all, GPL gives me more enjoyment and satisfaction than All other
racing sims/games put together! The physics model alone, makes this
title a landmark in the history of computer simulation.

If you need to tone down the AI strength just read the
instructions on the Alison Hine GPL site.
