any low-key GPL clubs welcoming new drivers?

by SS » Sat, 09 Aug 2003 01:06:12

I figure it's about time I tried GPL online.

Actually, I tried VROC a few times about a year ago (and once again today),
but that experiment was short-lived as I found it very difficult to
consistently find races with more than one driver at anywhere other than
Monza.   So I went back to racing the AI, which I still find great fun.  But
I am once again feeling the urge to try to race GPL against sentient beings.
I'm new to (GPL) online racing, though, so wouldn't want to jump into a
league with a rigid schedule and maybe equally rigid expectations.  Can
anyone recommend a good GPL "club" where people just get together when they
can to race with each other without points or a schedule?  I know that
definition could probably be applied to VROC, but something a bit more
predictable in terms of consistently finding good races is what I'm after.
I can hold my own in GPL (GPLRank of -32 or so), but that's all offline
racing, which I realize is a different cup o' grease.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
itazura

You'll want the WinVroc?  if that is not what you were talking about...
neat windows chat/racelist program...  actually much more than neat, friggin
very good.  I see about 2 guys on there most nights...  more than that
already racing.

If you haven't had the WinVroc app, pay attention when you DL it, you need
<<IIRC>> 1 file to go with it, and if your on XP, you have to remove one
file from the winvrock folder...  easy to follow steps though.

Well, hey...   rather than me getting about half of the details right, you
can look in either of these 2 places I happen to have bookmarked here at
work...    Rest of my 'marks are at home.
http://gplpp.com/index.htm  list of most all gpl add-ons  has links to other
sites too....

http://magnust.d2g.com/  Tracks database, 300+ tracks you can get?  should
be links to other sites IIRC.

as far as league play, I haven't tried that yet...

Hope that helped anyway?

Yes, I do have WinVROC already.  That's working fine.

Thank you.  I already know of those and agree that they're wonderful
resources.

Neither have I, in GPL.  And that's what I'm after, though I'd prefer
something a bit less structured than a formal league with points and
scheduled races at regular intervals.  I was thinking more along the lines
of a group of people who know each other and have a shared perspective on
what 'good racing' means and who just get together when people are free to
have some racing fun.  I wish I could say that has been my experience using
(win)VROC, but it hasn't.

There used to be group called the average drvers club (ADC) over at
www.speedgeezers.com   The site was working a couple of weeks ago but
doesn't seem to be there atm.  Back when I was playing GPL I had a great
time with these guys.  No points involved so it didn't matter if you missed
a race or two - the emphasis was on clean racing for the sake of it.

If you're into racing F2's, the VROC F2 Club sounds like it might be right up
your alley.  Not sure to get more info on it.  )Perhaps someone else can chime
in.)  But, I think that you'll find info on www.vroc.net if you do a little
digging.

Try here - CTD Racing. Nice bunch of guys in US, Europe, Australia,
mostly +40 rank, relaxed, informal racing.
