CPR and system requirements

I just upgraded our computer for my son to be able to play CPR: 200MHz
Pentium Overdrive, Viper S330 graphics board, and a Grand Prix 1 racing wheel.
I do not know the framerate, but it is unusable even with some of the textures
shut off. We have 24MB RAM and the game port is on an integrated sound board
(Creative, I think). Is there some way to reduce the graphics to speed up the
frame rate significantly? Would upgrading the RAM and/or buying a dedicated
game board help significantly, or should we just forget CPR on this system?
BTW, ICR2 works fine, but of course has relatively primitive graphics.

Thanks in advance for your advice, larry

Hmmm...I run CPR on a 166mmx 32mb ram and voodoo 3dfx card and it is just
dandy...perhaps you ought to invest in a 3dfx card and download the glide patch
- I have no problems with this game and your system would leave mine standing!
Good luck!

A 3dfx card is what you need. It will run very nicely once you do that.
Voodoo1 or, if you're planning on upgrading your computer in the next year
or so then maybe go for a Voodoo2. Prices have come way, way down on Voodoo1
cards, and I think the Voodoo2's have dropped already. I read somewhere
about a $150.00 card recently.

The guys are right. I too have a Pentium 166 (non MMX) WITH a 3dfx-board,
and the game runs almost smooth as silk.

definitly get a 3dfx board, and I would increase the ram to at least 32 meg,
or more if you can afford it

Thanks to all who responded. The vote appears unanimous, a voodoo 3dfx card is
needed to run this simulation. I just wish I had had this information before
buying the Viper S330 card. Oh well.

Cheers, larry

Actually, you'll find it's needed for almost all cars sims which have been
released in the last year or so, and are upcoming, and really most computer
games of any kind. There are other cards that do a good job, but for car
sims, the 3dfx card is your best investment.

Don't despair - the 3dfx cards *are* unbeatable
for games, but they don't do squat for 2d graphics
(i.e. windows and windows apps.). If all you use
your computer for is games, though, then you
probably are experiencing "buyers remorse"...

However, the Viper *is* a very good all-around video
card.

check the CPR read.me file for a list of video cards that don't work
well with the sim. I have an ATI... it looks like night racing.
BTW, try (if you hav'nt) playing ICR2 in DOS, typing " indycar -h "
at the prompt for SVGA graphics

This is for Larry, not David.  I don't have his original posting.

Larry, I have a very similar system as yours (P200, Viper 330 and Voodoo).
I use the Viper for CPR.  With the dash off I get a framerate of 40.  With
the dash on, I'm around 30.  I love my Viper, especially with Flight Sim 98
as it accelerates in a window.  Thus I can open multiple windows and get a
decent framerate.  Some games don't look good with a Viper (F1RS is the
first that comes to mind).  So for it I use my VooDoo.  Keep your viper and
add a VooDoo.  They can coexist on the same machine.
