I realize this is probably the stupidest question anyone has ever asked
about GPL, but I can't help myself.  How do I know which one I'm driving?
As a neophyte, I've tried everything from novice to Gran Prix and the car
appears the same even though the Gran Prix feels faster.  My times are about
the same with any one I choose, and the AI seems to pass me just as fast no
matter what I drive, even on long straights.  I'm sure I must be missing
something.

The cars won't look any different but they will sound different.
I'm surprised you can't feel any real difference in speed and acceleration
though???
What type of controller are you using?
When you are driving do you put the pedal to the metal so to speak??
Is your controller calibrated correctly?
Since you're learning, stay away from the Grand Prix cars and concentrate on
the F2 and F3 cars.
Once you are comfortable with them and are lapping quickly, try the F1 cars.

Cheers,
...Colin

I could be wrong, but I think you are talking about race length / difficulty
when you say novice, GP, etc. When people talk about F2 and F3 they mean
using the basic or advanced trainers,  which have similar power to weight
characteristics as the F2 and F3 cars of the era although they are not
strictly F2 or F3 cars. F2 have roughly half the power of F1 and F3 half
again.

It sounds like you're changing the race settings from Novice through inter ,
pro and Grand Prix, this won't change the car you're driving or the AI cars.
To drive a different car in training mode is easy, you just select Novice
trainer, Advanced trainer or Grand Prix from the main screen where you also
select the damage model I think.
You need to create a new player setup for actually racing the Novice or
Advanced trainer, I can't remember how to do that off-hand but I'm sure
someone else here can help you.

For starters, the F3 cars only have 4 gears.

Thanks to all who answered my question.  I think I've pretty much got it
figured out now.  Now if I can figure out how to drive.
