Please help - F1RS keeps locking up

by Dave Bower » Mon, 26 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I'm at the end of my tether with F1RS atm, and was hoping someone could
help me out. Whenever I play (I have the Voodoo version installed), the
game locks up after a few laps of play, apparently even less when I use
an external camera. The sound continues whirring repeatedly, but all
video comes to a halt. It doesn't happen with other games like TOCA,
which are running in a similar circumstances. I get the impression it's
probably to do with my 3dfx card, which is a Tiawanese Voodoo Rush
clone, but I think I've got the latest drivers installed.

My system is a P200MMX with 48meg.

If anyone can help, please don't wait because I'm dying to fight it out
at Spa with some real competition :)

Thanks!

I guess this is the first thing I would point a finger at. If you installed
DirectX5.0 and let your current 2D video drivers be over-written,
and you got and installed the latest drivers (including Glide 2.43)
from www.3dfx.com , then I think it may be your 3dfx card. A
RUSH was definately not the one to get unfortunately. Is there
some way you can try a real 3dfx card?

Other than that, about the only other thing which gives games
problems is your soundcard.

Also, have you overclocked your system or 3dfx RUSH card?
Either of those can be the problem too.

I knew it was a gamble getting a shitty card, so I arranged it with the
shop so if it didn't work they'd let me exchange it for a Monster 3D.
I'll check it out...

Well, it's an SB16, pretty popular so I can't see that being the case.

Nope, no overclocking...

Thanks a lot for your help, I'll try it out with a Monster 3D card!!

I had the same problems but i am running the D3D version with a Matrox
Mystique 220 4mb.I ended up doing a Scandisk of my drive and a full Disk
Defrag and then installed the latest drivers for my Mystique and now no more
problems.Hope this helps,and no it's not just a 3Dfx related problem.

Just a thought, have you tried changing the Default=WAVX3 to
Default=WAVPW in SND_CPA.INI?  It fixed a sound driver crash on my
system (DM3dfx), but no real reason for it to fix the problem for you.

Dave.

Make sure you have the glide.dll file in your windows/system directory
as I think f1rs sometimes removes it, and doesn't put it back? Also
check out the latest patches from ubisoft, I had a similar problem and
one of the patches stopped it (cannot remember which one, but there
are only two of them?)

You might also want to turn off replays as that causes stutters at the
start of races too.

As far as I know F1RS doesn't remove glide.dll. Installing the Glide
2.43 drivers does, as the new DLL for Glide is Glide2.dll. Strangely
the game needs Glide 2.43 (Glide2.dll) but used Glide.dll to see if
you have a 3dfx card installed. I should think this needs fixing too. But
they need to fix the GLOBAL game setups first IMHO.

Ar yes, that was it? I knew there was a problem with the glide.dll
being removed, when in fact it is still needed by f1rs.
