GP2 in hand!

by The Enigmatic O » Sun, 05 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Well, based on the mostly good things I'd heard (and the cheap price
tag and the fact my computer should run it pretty well) I bought GP2.  Just
arrived a few minutes ago.  This should be fun.

Any suggestions on where to go to maximize the experience?

Hmm.. err.. hmmm where should we start? It's been quite a long time.

First of all, Gp2 was before the era of 3d-acceleration.  Don't expect
incredible visuals, but quality graphics for no 3d-acceleration.  For you to
compare.. think of Duke Nukem 3d.  The menu GUi is quite complex so I
suggest you read the manual carefully (if there is one with the game).  I
have no idea of what computer processor you have, but there is good chance
that you won't be able to race with everything on.  Cut back with the mirror
graphics, and the sky.

AI.. hmm you might develop a love/hate relationship with those guys.  At
times they are great, others not really.  Gp2 is a great hotlapper,
personally I haven't raced with the AI for quite a time.

Physics.. I suggest you take out all the Helps, especially the throttle
help, but keep the prefered line especially if you want to try add-on
tracks.

Gp2 is also one of the most in-depth games in terms of third-party utilities
and add-ons.  I find about all I want at http://www.grandprix2.com/  ,
http://www.alphaf1.com/gp2/  and http://www.gp2.web.pt/

Pretty old game, yes, but I can't run new stuff that well.

Yup.  I knew that.  Graphics still look pretty good.

I'll try that.  But a 233mmx with 64 megs of RAM and a Rendition card
should do pretty well.

        OK.  I'll try that.

        OK.  Sounds good.

Yes.  I heard about hundreds of tracks, which is part of why I grabbed
the game now.  Thanks for the links.

The Rendition card won't do a thing - GP2 doesn't take advantage of 3D
graphics cards. I have a P2 350 with 128 megs and still struggle at the
start of races - particularly at Monaco and at some of the newest tracks
which are more graphics-intensive than the originals. Best idea is to turn
the sky texture off - a big gain for very little loss IMHO.

It still is better than the S3 I'm replacing it with in normal
graphical rendering.  Graphics cards matter even if my Voodoo 2 doesn't come in
to play.

And I'll try turning the sky texture off, thanks.

There were a bunch on sale on ebay a week ago.  Check there.

Also, search Yahoo Shopping--there's a store that carries it.

Here's a link to the store that sold through Ebay that I purchased
from.  A bit expensive, though, I got it for 9.95 plus shipping.

This may not be a lot of use to you, I grant, but GP2's just been re-
released on "super-budget" (UKP5) over here. There were stacks in my local
Electronics Boutique (well, fairly local - it's 15 miles away) last time
I looked. So if you can't find it anywhere else, you could always order it
from a British place.

A general question - will it disappoint after Gpl? I know the graphics are
not 3D accelerated but otherwise will it fill the gap 'til GP3, WSC, etc.

Tough question, looking at it with post-GPL eyes I cannot justify the amount
of time spent on GP2 that I did. If you can live with it spinning you out
for no good reason whatsoever, it probably provides the best immersion
factor and there's literally tons of stuff for it floating around the net.
When I get a craving for downforce, on the other hand, I use ICR2 or F1RS
instead.

here's one thing to think about.   Can you set up your system
to run a dos program?  GP2 can be run in windows box, but unless your
soundcard etc can be configured for dos, then you may be in for a
hassle.  Gp3 is comming soon AND F12k so you may want to look for those.

Depends. (There's a helpful answer...) If it's as cheap in Australia as
it is in the UK (UKP5), then you've not got a lot to lose.

Its main strong point is the vast array of third-party addons - a lot
are rubbish, but if you can live with rough edges, there are some
tracks available that you probably won't find for any other game
(Aintree and Reims, anyone?).

Personally, I rather like it. But I'd recommend a joystick over a wheel
as its wheel support isn't great (no FF for a start).

One tip: if it doesn't run smoothly (it had huge spec requirements for
the day) turn off the clouds. It makes a *big* difference.

Let me respond with a Hell, yeah.

I just got it myself and, last night, finally took it for an extended
spin.  Wonderful fun.  And I'm drooling over all of the available tracks.
