F1RC - is it really quite bad?

by Arto Wik » Wed, 28 Mar 2001 06:42:05

Well, a couple of hours of F1RC. In addition to my first complaint
of the horrible muzak, which I cannot turn off, the game(!) seems
to be quite demanding on the system: my 1.1GHz processor, 256Mb RAM,
and Geforce 2 GTS seem not to be enough! And GPL, N4, etc. run
softly and nice in my system...

In addition to the slide show race starts, also going from page to
page, going to driving, coming back from driving, ..., everything is
so slow. And what was worst, the lousy game also made GPL run badly:
slide show starts also there! Luckily booting my system helped!
But I am afraid of even starting F1RC any more... I use still
DX7.0b, which seems to work well with GPL, N4, GP3, F1CS2000, SCGT,
Viper Racing, ... Perhaps DX8.0 is needed, but do those impostant
sims work with DX8.0? I would not like to change, if not needed.

And I also second to the opinion that F1RC cars seem to turn around
their middle, not by the front wheels. The tracks look beautiful, but
driving on them is not so fun!

I am really disappointed to the F1RC! The demo was promising, but
it promised too much! To me GP3 and F1CS2000 seem to be much better
programs. And little by little GP3 is becoming my favorite modern
F1 sim... It could be better though, but it is the only one with
bearable FF, and the graphics does not look too bad, either...

Any hints for making me like F1RC?

I don't know anything about F1RC but I can tell you that GPL, N4, SCGT and
Viper work fine with DirectX 8.0a.

Your system should scream along with F1RC. If it were me, I'd try
DirectX8.0a and see if that can fix your problems.

An awful lot of people like this game but I can't make myself like it.
It seems pretty easy, even on expert mode.  I'm not fast by any
stretch, but it's disappointing to beat times I've set in GP3 on the
2nd or 3rd hot lap in F1RC.  Although the ff is ok, I still don't feel
connected to the road somehow.  Another complaint is that it is hard
to pick out braking points, even when running in FSAA.  But, the
biggest turnoff is the sound.  It is still really annoying, even after
trying all the new ones.

I won't give up on it, but since you can only play one sim at a time,
and time is precious, I will probably stick to GP3.

I was complaining:

Well, perhaps my fault! When I changed the "TNT-Primary Display" to
"Primary Display DRI", the fps went much better. Not very informative
selection names, though. And the manual doesn't tell more...

I have basically the same system as you and F1RC runs extremely smoothly.
Although enabling environmental mipmapping (or whatever it is called) slows
things WAY down.

Extremely weird - on my PIII500 V3 it runs very good and on my PIII866
GFII GTS it runs very smooth, with all details on during a full grid
race..
The only thing I have turned off is 'environment blabla' or something
like that, that costs lots of fps but is turned off in the default
mode. Play with the settings, on your system f1rc should run
-extremely- good!

Make sure you choose DX8a, the latest version. All my sims work
perfect with DX8a: N4, F1RC, F1CS, GPL, GP3..

Sure, wait for the AI, multiplayer and force feedback patch, wait for
some user-made carsounds and F1RC will rock! :)

F1 Racing Championship runs perfectly smooth in 1600x1200 2xFSAA LOD Bias
at -2 and everything maxed out in the game on my Voodoo5, no stuttering or
slowdowns whatsoever. My GeForce DDR doesn't seem to be running the game as
well, though.
