I`ve a PIII-550mhz, with 256mb PC100 memory, S\B.live, GeForce 2 GTS 64mb
( fast memory), and i was thinking about getting a AMD 1.4ghz... with PC133,
agpx4 as mine it x2 only........?
Its about 200 upgrade, is it worth it........?
My games play and look great, but i do get 1st corner slow down, which i
belive is down to AI.... which is dependent on the pro.......??

Yes, it is worth it. I have just done a very similar upgrade, spent 400 on
1.33 GHz, Abit KT7A-RAID and 1.5 Gb of RAM. I'd recommend you get a 1.33 if
cost is a problem. IIRC, 1.4's are much more expensive then 1.33, with only
a 66 mhz advantage, it is not worth it.

Do it!  You won't regret it :)!
BTW- what motherboard are you considering?  I can vouch for the Abit
KT7A-RAID as a very nice board.

Don't do it unless you get DDR memory

I think the big question is will you be okay with something a little behind
the curve in a couple of months. Nvidia is about to release their new
chipset (NForce I think is the code name) and some preproduction models have
already been tested on the hardware sites... from the looks of what I've
read I think I'm going to want one when it ships. Don't get me wrong, I have
an Abit KT7A-Raid 1.2 Ghz. system that I put together 4 months ago and it
has been a very good system... but. I have had to jump through some hoops to
get it to work as it should have out of the box. Check out the
alt.comp.periphs.abit and do a quick search on USB issues... VIA chipsets
are infamous for a poor implementation of this standard. There is also USB
2.0 very close to being implemented on all mobo's.
I guess what it comes down to is your personality. If you are the type who
won't look back and wonder if you should have waited and are willing to just
enjoy the new system then, by all means, upgrade. But, if it will always be
in the back of your mind that you should have waited... maybe see how this
new guy on the mobo block shapes up first.
Good luck with this decision,
Robin

>Don't do it unless you get DDR memory

DDR ram is VERY over rated. Almost all reviews show that DDR boards
only perform 2-3% faster, because the Athlon is not designed to take
advantage of the memory bandwidth.

However, it IS better, and DDR prices have come WAYYY down, although
the mobo's are still more expensive.

If your 256 mb pc100 RAM is good quality, then it is highly likely it
will be fine at 133 mhz. If not, RAM is very cheap now.

btw, the athlon systems FLYYYY!!! Gotta love it!
