To Kyle Langston (and everyone else):
Kyle, if you believe it's impossible for the WC cars to run three wide
throught the tri-oval at Talladega, you haven't watched many races there.
This year, in the Daytona 500, several sections of the race featured three
wide racing in the pack--and the tri-oval at Daytona is slightly tighter, and
one lane NARROWER than the tri-oval at Talladega!!
You need only watch the beginning of the 1993 Winston 500 to see lap after lap
of three wide racing through the Talladega tri-oval, and from in-car
telemetry, none of the drivers were lifting at all! In fact, I've seen them
occasionally make it four wide through the tri-oval, but not often.
In fact, they don't even have to hit the apex of the tri-oval to make it
through without lifting. If you have ESPN2, watch qualifying this Friday and
you'll see what I mean. On the warmup lap, the drivers will drive very high
in both sets of turns, right up against the wall. They'll do the same thing
through the tri-oval as they take the green flag. They do this for two
reasons: (1) it is the longest way around the track, which gives them more
time to get the engine up to speed, and (2) running the top of the track frees
the engine up, allowing it to reach speed faster. Both of these techniques
are essential to getting a restricted engine up to speed.
