Kevin,

You need a special entry in the core.ini for cable modems.

(Check the GPL/readme.txt file for specifics)

Jason.

>hindrance to others trying to race online at my current skill level?

No, not at all. People of all abilities race online, and if you can
stay on the track and turn consistent laps you will actually do quite
well.

Yes, just look for comments or talk to people online.

VROC. http://www.vroc.net as far as I remember.

The Coventry is more forgiving to drive in terms of a slighly more
docile engine and a compliant chassis (more so than the other cars).
Perhaps also you just downloaded or created a setup for the Cov that
just suits you better.

Gawd no. The Cov can be very competitive and with practice you can
beat or scare the pants of Lotus drivers using it. Just consider how
many seconds you will lose by spinning or going off the track, then
consider how much more likely you will be to spin or crash if you
don't use the Cov. If the arithmetic works out unfavourably stick with
the Cov, even if it is slightly slower on a good lap.

Yes. Don't worry about it.

Cheers!

Hi Daisy,

The reasons that people say "please avoid overtaking in lap 1" are:

At the start the warping is the worst.

Not all the drivers know eachother.

Your definition of running wide may not be the same as someone else.
For example, the driver in front of you could try to avoid a driver,
unvisible to you, due to available bandwidth. Don't forget, this
driver did a better qualifying lap then you, so you may expect (s)he
can handle his/her car better. Oh, you came in late and you're so much
better and didn't have time to qualify?  Then why do you need to
overtake in turn 1? You got the whole race to prove you're so good,
use the rest of the corners instead of turn 1.

On VROC, not all the drivers are able to handle their car on cold
tires.

I guess you'll agree with me that first corner/lap accidents are not
fun, especially after 30 min of qualifying.  If rules like no
overtaking during the first corner/lap can take care of this, I'm all
for it.

When you are driving with more experienced/known drivers, then you'll
see that it is possible to overtake during the first lap, but it isn't
common. The driver in front of you just doesn't allow it, and an
experienced driver wouldn't take the risk.

That's very true and it is a problem.

Yes, but if he is scraping the armco in t1 at Monza , I going around
him.

True , except that he/she may have gone off 6 times during practice
to get that one good lap.

The sooner he is behind me , the sooner I can work on someone else.

If you can't handle the car ,then you should not try to overtake.

Yeah, I hear ya Remco. Like you ,I've been racing on VROC from the
beginning. First corner accidents have always been a sore spot and I
assume that they always will. Basically what I am saying though , is
that overtaking is not necessarily the problem. It is lack of car
control.
Last night there was a CW hosted race at Watkins (I think you were
there too). I was in the Eagle and qualified 9th of 17 with a 1:06:69
I think (damn, some of you guys are fast). I lost 2 places at the
start because I was slow getting away. (They didn't crash me BTW)  I
avoided 1 pile up and made 2 clean passes all on the first lap. Then,
due to attrition ,discos ,and some other passes I managed a second
place finish. My set ups are only fair qualifiers but ,they are great
race cars and they have an advantage on cold tires. If I can get ahead
early then I can usually expect to finish well.
I have been pummeled into T1 many times (and I have probably
pummelled some of you), so I know what you are saying. But for someone
who is new to VROC ,it may appear that there is a certain amount of
"snobbery" going on. I just want these people to use common sense
instead of listening to the pundits in this newsgroup (yes ,I include
myself). After all , if they stuck with GPL long enough to feel like
they can race online, we can assume that they have a fair
understanding of racing and racing etiquette. If you slam on the
anchors to avoid passing someone in L1, then you are just as likely to
cause a pile up. I see just as many,  or more, accidents cause by
someone carelessly re-entering the track or, by getting sideways
leaving the grid.
It boils down to this: If you are behind me and you think you can
make a clean pass on the first lap, go for it. And I will be the first
in line to applaud you for it. If you leave me an opening, I assure
you that I will return the favor.
