GPL cars on the-Fast-Lane.com??

by Rick Ka » Tue, 30 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I was searching GPL web pages when I came across "The Fast Lane" web
site and noticed that it contained replacment cars. I was wondering
about what tools are required to create new cars and modify the
performance specs.

Specifically I would like to know if it was possible to make a series
of 60's sports cars with realistic handling in GPL. Another question
for those who have tried these replacement cars. Is it possible to
keep the original cars as well as the add ons, like in a "67scars"
directory next to the original directory.

I would love to take a Jag out on the ring using the GPL engine :-)

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but AFAIK all car-sets you can dl from anywhere
just are graphics updates of the existing cars. Unlike the graphical
description of a car, which lies in the *.dat file and can be changed, the
physical description (like torque curve, mass, wheelbase etc.) obviously
lies buried deep within the gpl.exe file and it would take a *very* talented
hacker to get a grip on it (*if* it is possible at all).
If you want to do a little bit of painting the skins, get WinMip and
GPLBatch from here: http://members.aol.com/winmip/
These proggys let you unpack the *.dat file of a car and convert the *.mip
files (which contain the textures) to and from *bmp's.
I'm not sure about 3do editing (the polygons, which make up the car), but I
think Paul Hoad's GPL Editor at http://members.xoom.com/paulhoad/gpl/ can do
something there. I think, there is also an AutoCAD plug-in around somewhere
(maybe at the FastLane)

Sorry Peter, to disappoint you, but it is possible to alter the car
3DOs <g>

 Go to

http://start.at/KOTR

and you'll find an AutoCad pluggin to help your task. While you're
there, check out the GREAT Ferrari replacement these extremely
talented people created....

But as Peter said that's only the look of the car (I say "only" with great
respect to the job they've done).  You can't give the Ferrari the hp of the
BRM with these changes.

Nor can you build a GT40 or Porsche 908 or a Jag D type, I'm sure somebody's
trying to figure out how to hack it as we speak though.  Problem is if they
do they could also add an extra 4 cylinders to the Lotus 49 (without telling
anybody) and blow everybody else's doors off too (if they had doors).

Seems you misunderstood me! I know, that the 3do's can be altered, I just
didn't know how. I was talking about the car's physics, which can not be
altered, AFAIK.
And yes, this GPLEA-Ferrari is very fine! These guys really know, what
they're doing!

WHAT! You're telling me that I've to read AND understand the message
before I reply? <g> You're right, I guess I was just to lazy to really
understand the message, sorry for that.
