Voodoo 2s Or 3s & Companies??

by Thom j » Wed, 09 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Hello All;
I need help, opinions and comments on 'V2 accelerator cards' verses
V3s and named companies.. My previous post I state; I was going to
buy the Creative {Refrub} V2-12meg for $49.99 but they are out of
stock & don't know when or even if they'll be up forsale again at this
$49.99 price?
I looked into the regular price & it is quite high! Question/Comment:
Is the 'Voodoo3' really bad & have a lot of bug-fixes {as posted on
ras}?? Also What company is the best for the Voodoo3? Creative,
Diamond or STB? I dont know anything about STB & these ext #s
have me confused on what is what? 'e.g. 2000, 3000 & 3500?
If I "Sli" two Creative Voodoo2s at a regular price now it will cost
well over $200. This doesn't seem to be a great deal now? But if I
buy the "3DFX 2000 PCI 16MB SDRAM Voodoo3 Dual 32Bit"
(mfg part# V32316) it is only $98.95 at buycom.com. Is this card
ok or not.  "O" Also I'm not a "Diamond" buyer. I prefer Creative
but need comments on STB. Any and all ideas, suggestions & etc
will be appreciated...Tia

No, it is very good indeed... far better than my old Voodoo 2.  I have had
very little problem in getting applications to run although there are a few
that need patches.

As far as I know, at this time, the only company selling the Voodoo 3 is
3DFX which, by the way, is the same as STB more or less, since they have
merged (or STB bought-out 3DFX, or something like that.)

Just prior to the intro of the Voodoo3, 3dfx purchased STB and cards are
being marketed under the 3dfx brand name. No other companies are making
V3 cards. The 2000, 3000 and 3500 models offer different performance
levels and features. Check http://www.3dfx.com for all the spec info. I
don't know what quality issues there are with V3, but if you're going to
buy one, I'd probably spring for at least the 3000. I would also expect
most, if not all, incompatibilities to be solved before too long.

Voodoo2 cards will probably sell at a bit of a premium, as people who buy
TNT2's may still find they want to play games with Glide support in
addition to keeping the nVidia card. With the V2 being a discontinued
product, supply will diminish. Of course, if someone comes up with a
Glide wrapper that offers acceptable performance on a non-3dfx board,
demand for the V2s could drop, in which case the prices would drop like a
stone.

I believe that the Voodoo2 1000 is the older V2 add on board. It has 12mb
ram and is listed as a add-on board by re-sellers. The best price on
PriceWatch is $86 which maybe cheaper than the other Voodoo2 boards.

Creative and Diamond have dumped the Voodoo3 in favor of the TNT2's.
If you reaaly want a Voodoo3 you have to get it from STB, as they are now
part of 3dfx and the only supplier of Voodoo3's
the numbers on voodoo3's are for different clock speeds,

2000 are at 143mhz (slower than voodoo2 in SLI)
3000 are at 166mhz (about as good as voodoo2 in SLI)
3500 are at 183mhz (better than voodoo2 in SLI)
All are faster than single voodoo2 board.

I will keep my two voodoo2's in SLI (for glide games)and get a hercules TNT2
ultra which runs at 175mhz and save to overclock to 190mhz, and has 32mb of
memory to voodoo3's small 16mb.

Yeah right, like Diamond and Creative had a choice in dumping the V3. If
3DFX didn't become the sole supplier of Voodoo3 board in the market, I bet
Creative and Diamond would have made Voodoo3 cards for the extra income.
