Unfortunately, it's the superior platform who lost (for many reasons).
PS2's hype is all what kept it the most popular.

Sony always seem to have superb timing. Playstation one. Very substandard
system, yet it was the most popular, and PS2 is the same. Got to hand it to
them...

I don't agree on the first point. The psx was cheaper and more powerful than
the sega saturn. It was a decent system with better release games than sega
had with the saturn.
The ps2 however is twice the price of the dreamcast and the graphics and
games are not as good. The ps2 is substandard. The psx was not. Not that I
like the psx though.

Superb timing? You can't get a PS2 unless you buy it on EBay. They
couldn't have screwed the pooch harder if they tried.
