Marshal Dies - a plea to RAS

Marshal Dies - a plea to RAS

by Darren Dunca » Mon, 05 Mar 2001 14:16:50

It's just been confirmed that the Marshal died from the incident in today's
F1 Australian GP.

I would like to make a plea to RAS that we respect the Marshal's family and
loved ones by not using this as an argument to further fan the flames of the
recent F1 vs Nascar safety discussions.

No motor racing is completely safe as was proved today in another sad day
for auto sports. My thoughts and sympathies go to his family and friends.

respectfully,

Darren

Certainly no flames from me.  Only identify and solve the problem --
please!  We've lost two workers over the course of less than half a
dozen races and their deaths must not be in vain.

I could "NOT" believe what I was watching from the safety of my favourite
chair this afternoon as this airborne "Missile" was approaching the
fence.........my son and I standing in the same spot for most of the day
yesterday for Free Practice........only 6 feet from the fence.

From my son Greg and I our thoughts and sympathies also go to his family and
friends

Cheers David.

This is the first bit of rational thinking I have seen on this subject in
weeks Darren.

Indeed - this isn't a flame, so I hope it doesn't come across as such.
I just want to say NASCAR obviously needs to work on driver safety, F1
obviously needs to work on trackside safety. I still remember Monza so
clearly. It's sure getting depressing.

My condolonces to the family and friends of this man. It's alot like
Daytona on a certain level - it was such a great spectacle (great to
see the lesser teams and new drivers make such an impression) but it
was marred by tragedy. It may be a dangerous sport, but that sure
doesn't mean we need to accept death occuring regularly.

You are 100% right, I think FIA has to focus a little bit more on "non
drivers" safety, I can't really think of a way to do it now because what
they are having with the fences is already pretty big but they have to find
a way to prevent flying debris from the car going into every direction.

Maybe using a very thick plastic sheet glued on top the car, a bit like what
there used to be (maybe still is) on the windshiels in the US, instead of a
laminated windshield you put a thick transparent plastic sheet wich sort of
"holds" the pieces together instead of letting them fly away.

I couldn't find the reason of the marshall's death whether he was hit by the
body of the car, a weel of carbon pieces but it is quite ireleveant here, of
course with a "plastic sheet" system you couldnt' prevent the wheels from
going away it a crash but at least you wouldn't have carbon splinter moving
at high speeds everywhere.

The problem is always the same in this kind of circuit were you have walls
immediatly close to the track, places like monaco, montreal or any other
racetrack with wall immediatly close to the track can see this kind of
accident happening.
