N3 and P II 300

Hi,
NASCAR 3 seems to be too much for my system:
P2 300, 128 MB
Riva TNT & Voodoo2
Sound Blaster Live Value
Saitek R4 FF-Wheel

Frame rates are quite low in d3d and 3dfx. As I have to run it with 640x480
res, I use the Voodoo, because N3 offers anti-aliasing only with the Voodoo.
Can anyone tell me, if it would run better with two Voodoo 2 in SLI on my
system?
And, if so, do I need to install 2 really identical cards (same make or
type)?

TIA

Well I dunno the problem.. my system as follows:

PII 300
128mb Ram
2x 12mb Voodoo 2's running SLI
Soundblaster 16
I-Force Steering Wheel

I get 30fps without problems, drawing as many cars as possible, and with
only Grass/Asphalt and Sky turned off.. they're un-needed really.. :)
does your Force Feedback controller plug into the Joystick Port?? that
slows things down Considerably as the joystick port isn't that fast (My
I-Force wheel goes through the Com Port which doesn't use as much of
the  Processor)
Otherwise.. can't complain... try turning Anti-Aliasing off in Graphics
Section, otherwise I do not know what else to do :)

also try a program named PC Acellorator 3000 (www.3dfiles.com has it)
that helps things a bit (I use it) and it won't damage anything :)

                hope it helps :)

N3 is edging closer to GPL where it is the field of AI that affects frame
rate more than graphics.  I get constant 30 fps with everything maxed out in
the graphics and sound department (on a similar but slightly faster CPU
system to yours)--until I add in a full field of AI.  Then, when there are
plenty of AI nearby, the frame rate plummets just like in GPL.  Of course,
you can deal with 43 instead of 19 AI, but the trend is the same.  It's not
the graphics that are likely causing your frame rate slow downs, but the CPU
not being able to handle the AI is.  Try running alone vs. with 43 AI and
record the difference.  Let us know the results!!

Marc.

This is why I'm upgrading my P2-333 to a P3-550 and overclocking it to
616MHz..  Hopefully that'll be enough power to handle the AI..

So N3 will become a very expesive game for you... and maybe for me too...
Well... with a P3 550 or 600 I maybe would even be able to run SCGT!!!!

I'm gonna have an interview with my purse...

It's only expensive if you think $450 is alot of money.  That's just a
minor pc investment for me...

That might be true, but if you're already using a P2/400 or lower, it's
much LESS expensive to go with an upgrade to a P3 because chances are
very good that all you have to do is plug the new CPU into the
motherboard.

Many less knowledgeable folks are completely unaware that an Athlon CPU
won't plug into a slot-1 motherboard.  This means you have to upgrade the
motherboard and memory right along with the CPU.

And, unfortunately, the motherboards for the Athlon aren't nearly as
plentiful or cheap.

Not until I hear more about some of these incompatibilities that are
cropping up...
