Thrustmaster Ferrari FF wheel "shuts off"

I've noticed a few times that my wheel will sometimes stop giving any
feedback in the middle of a race.  It still works, it's just not providing
any resistance to my hands.  (kind of disconcerting mid-race).

I thought it was just in GPL but last night it happened in SCGT as well.

Exit the game and go back and it's fine.

Any ideas.

I think I have tried everything to solve the exact same problem.... but no
success yet.

Try using the serial connection instead of USB, some claim that might do the
trick.
Others suggest that an overheating powersupply might be the reason, but I
have yet to mount a serious fan on my wheel to check out the performance in
near zero temperatures ;)

PS: if you should happen to stumble over a solution I would like to hear
from you.....

It was on for a few hours yesterday, you may have something there.

You bet, same to you.  ;)

It doesn't do it in Windows 2000 so it's a Windows 98 driver thing.

Switching off "poll with interupts" can sometimes cure the problem.

I'll give that a try, thanks (damn it's a pain to get at the back of my PC).

Did you notice any other difference after the switch?  Framerate,
"jumpiness" of the wheel (I noticed a big improvement going from my old
gameport driven wheel to the USB)

I have had this problem intermittently with the Logitech Wingman
Formula Force.  Dave Pollatsek at MGI replied: "A bunch of people that
have had this problem with the LWFF are reporting that their mechanism
is overheating and that triggers a thermal sensor that shuts off the
motors; people have worked around this by turning down the spring
strength in the LWFF control panel and/or putting a cooling fan on the
base (no joke).  I still have a suspicion that there's another problem
more on the software/driver level that can cause a similar problem as
well, but still haven't gotten my hands on one that exhibits the
behavior (all of our LWFF's work fine, although they are the older
kind)."

Come to think of it, I used to drive with the wheel in my lap.  I
don't think I've had the problem since mounting the wheel on the desk.
Perhaps it was heat related.

If the problem persists, try turning the wheel off for a few seconds and
then back on (while still in  the game). See if your FF comes back.  In GPL,
make sure the Spring Gain is turned to 0 in Windows Controller Panel. GPL
doesn't use spring gain and sometimes having it set to anything but 0 will
make strange things happen.

no other detractions that affect me.
if things would be "better" (framerate) i guess i'd be concerned, but
GPL runs at 35-36, pretty solid unless i run an add-on with heavy
graphics. but this is with a voodoo2 - so that alone could be my
solution... but change is hard for me. and upgrading to even a voodoo3
scares me. forget GeForceANYTHING...yikes!
