Simple, yet difficult at the same time. You can edit a car camera so that
it point somewhere else then the car itself. That way, you can create a
virtual crane that lets you do some nice pans and other effects. With the
field-of-view adjustements, you can push it even further. The Spa shot per
example has a driver on the pitroad when the race starts, then up the left
hill at Eau Rouge. The scene cuts because it's obvious he's soon going to
wreck ;-)
I find the idea really remarkable, as you use a crane and you really need to
be "there" with the other drivers. You need to drive hard not only to keep
up with the pack but to pick up realistic passing, crashes, etc..
As for those great Nurburgring shots from the rear of the car, I'm almost
sure there is some post-production edits to create some effects here
(sideway panning on a portion of a screen, using a smaller frame then the
whole picture to create shiver effects).
