Where to buy "Grand Prix" movie from the sixties?

I have had no luck buying a copy of this movie. It sounds cool and I read
posts here referring to that film, but it is so old that no places I've
found sell it. If anyone knows anywhere online or otherwise where a VHS
copy of this is available, please post or email! I am anxious to see
footage of the GPL-era cars and tracks prior to the game shipping!

Thanks!
Matt

Matt, you can purchase Grand Prix and many other fine auto videos and books
from Classic Motorbooks, PO Box 1, Osceola Wisconsin, 54020. The toll free
number is 800-826-6600. Give them a call for their free catalogue.

Try Wine Country Motorsports at Sears Point Raceway (707) 935-7223
Speedvision has a lot of shows on historic auto racing and cars. I bought a
satalite dish just for Speedvision and ESPN2.

I stumbled across a VHS-formatted "Deluxe Letter-Box Edition" at a
Suncoast Motion Picture video store at our local mall (Pheasant Lane
Mall, Nashua, NH) about two months ago. They apparently are part of a
larger group called Musicland Stores Corporation, which also owns the
Sam Goody and Media Play retail chains. Musicland's homepage is:

http://www.musicland.com/

but all they have there is info about Sam Goody stores.

It appears that you can also order it online from the MGM/United
Artists site. Their ordering page is:

http://www.mgmua.com/cgi-bin/cgi/vault_js.html

and just type "grand prix" (no quotes) in the "title" field.

If you do get a copy, MAKE SURE TO GET THE LETTERBOXED EDITION! It's
filmed in a very wide format (as were so many of the big mid-Sixties
feature films) and would definitely suffer greatly in a reformatted
"pan and scan" version.

IMO it was certainly worth the $25 or so, as the footage is very
enjoyable. Just fast-forward thru the acting after the first viewing
and get right to the racing! This version also includes the original
theatrical trailer, which is a nice little bonus. And, we apparently
won't be seeing the Monza banking in GPL, so this movie may be your
best shot at that.

Your local blockbuster video should be able to get you the letter box
version of this CLASSIC movie for only $25. Do not accept anything other
than the letter box version or you will be short changing your self!

You could also watch for it on SpeedVision's Lost Drive In!

Matt:
You really shouldn't have trouble finding this film. I've seen it in
nearly every video store I've been in. Try a store that specializes in
older films. If you can't find it, look for "The Young Racers," with
Bobby Darin starring. Made in 1962, it has 20 minutes of actual F1
races in it, at Monaco, Rouen, Spa, Reims, and Aintree. Some of the
last two could be F2 or F3. Some of the footage looks like it was
speeded up a little, but if you look at people walking in the
background, it seems like normal pace. Those turkeys were really
hauling the mail! But very little sliding. The way we drive these
sims, we'd be dead in fif*** minutes!

It was on TNT (via Astra, in Europe) a few weeks ago, and also some
months ago. Unscrambled, in English, no German Lip-Sync as on German
TV. I taped it this time to compare it to GPL. ;-)

I'm a little confused though: GPL is about 1967, while the movie
("GPM"?) was filmed during the 1966 season, but released in 1967? I
think they speak about being the first season with 3.0 litre engines.
In the movie, the French GP is AFAIR in Clermont-Ferrand (nice track,
btw), while the '67 GP was at the Bugatti-circuit in Le Mans, but GPL
replaces it with Rouen (also very interesting, according to the F1GP2
track).

Matt,

You would really be quite depressed at having to drive the Le Mans -
Bugatti circuit: it was the circuit that gave birth to the expression
"Micky Mouse track".

Rouen-les Essarts, whilst not being 100% historically accurate (for
1967), is a far more enjoyable and challenging circuit.

The last GP held at Rouen was the 1968 (still 3.0 litre formula) GP, so
the inclusion of Rouen, for the period modelled, is good. The only
other circuit that may have fitted in would have been Reims, but that is
not as challenging as Rouen.

For more information on the real circuits, please visit the site below.

>Matt,

Well, but I will certainly be delighted if Papyrus would make a sequel
to GPL that includes sports cars driving the "24 heures du Mans",
similar to Steve McQueens movie.

Yes, Reims was a simple high speed triangle. Mercedes won there 1 -2
at their comeback in 1954.

Been there for a quick peek, looks good.

But I have to protest against "NORDSCHLEIFE NURBURGRING ... was built
by the Nazi regime during the 1930's".
The Ring (similar to the AVUS in Berlin, or the "Autobahn", or even
the Olympic Games given to Berlin for 1936) was made years before the
NSDAP took over in 1933. To be more precise, it was proposed, planned
and build by the local government to fight unemployment, with strong
support by the german automobile club ADAC.

The track was finished in June 1927, and the 70th anniversary was
celebrated last year.
See http://www.nuerburgring.de/ (or .com) under "Mythos".
It's all in German, though. (BTW, adding a little to the recent
spelling postings: it's actually Nrburgring with an u-Umlaut, in HTML
it's Nürburgring.)

Also, "It is still used for Historic events." is luckily not
completely correct. True, The Eifel-Klassik a few weeks ago sported
oldtimer cars, but Walter Roehrl racing a turbocharged 500hp Audi
Quattro rallye car from the 1980's around the Ring has to be
considered rather hysteric than historic. At least this was announced
on German TV "DSF", along with a soon-to-be report.
Usually, the Nordschelife is used for car testing or advanced driving
lessons for car drivers and bike riders, also public driving is
possible in the evenings and on Sundays.
Real (touring car) racing takes place on the Nordschleife also, the 24
hours race of course, and the Veedol-Long-Distance-Cup VLN.
See the link under "Ergebnisse", or at http://vln.home.pages.de/
These are 4 hours races with all sorts of touring cars up to Porsche
935, doing laps under 8:30, but over the combined track that includes
the 4.5 km modern GP track.
Unfortunately, a driver was killed last weekend when he crashed his VW
into the wall on the Breitscheid bridge.

BTW: Detailed descriptions of the Nordschleife, but for the after 1970
state and with suggested race-lines for motor bikes, can be found
at
http://privat.schlund.de/TschauderRainer/nring/n-ring1.htm
http://privat.schlund.de/TschauderRainer/nring/n-ring1e.htm
