N2: coming out of the pits

by Domin » Sat, 04 Jan 1997 04:00:00

After exiting the pit lane I have a few 100 feet to catch up to the pack.
My spotter sometimes will tell me to pass (#) car.  When I catch the pack
(under yellow conditions mind you), and then try to pass (#) car, my
spotter tells me to stay behind (#) car.  It's the same one he just told me
to pass!  Anyone else have this happen?  It happens to me on various
tracks.

It happens at every track for me.  Just pretend that he means you are
supposed to pass him on the restart.  You can pretend, can't you? ;-)

Hmm, is this the same as the "spotter" in Multi?  In Multi, whenever you
first exit the pits, you always get a "pass #xx" message for a second or
two, and then it goes away.  I have learned that it will go away
normally and to ignore it.  If it stays on after you get to the
backstretch, then it's a real message.  I haven't run N2 enough to see
this, but it sounds the same.  I would guess you need to ignore that
first message (harder to do with voice) and wait and see what he says
futher into the lap.

Yes I have had the same problem on all the tracks.  The spotter will say
to pass car #xx but when you catch the field and pass the car he radios to
stay behind the same car he said to pass.  That is usually too late
anyway.  I tend to catch the field going to fast and take some cars with
me.

Dominic - you'll frequently get such a message just as you pull out of the
pit area, before your car is linked back into the pacing line.  Before
there was a spotter or a "pass so and so" message, this problem was never
noticed ... by the time the spotter message was implemented and the errant
message was noticed, there wasn't any time to go back and review the pacing
code to "fix" this problem, since the pacing code is fairly complex and has
been prone to bugs in the past.  The guy who did the spotter really wants
to fix this, if he can figure out how to do so without breaking anything
else ... however, I can't promise a fix.  For now, you can simply ignore
the "Pass so and so" message until you've cleared the pit exit area.

Yes I've had the same thing happen at various tracks.

Yep...and I've gotten my fair-share of Black Flags because
of this...   :(
