Firstly to all of you who have e-mailed me and posted here about the
speed on The Pits, sorry!
We are lucky enough to get our server space free on Demon Internet and
therefore have no control over how our system is run.
However, may I first bring a couple of point to your attention.
1. I have been told that our current server has an OS problem which is
causing the server to hang. I'll be contacting Demon today to try and
get them to pull there fingers out and get it fixed/
2. Over the past couple of days, I have checked the the Demon status
system and it has mentioned that "freak" weather in the US has damaged
a lot of the T1 cables. I can't confirm this as we don't get US
weather reports in the UK, but this could be part of the problem.
3. It may not be us! It could be the way your ISP routes its services
and how it's system gets connected to our server. Some may find our
site quick while some don't. If your ISP uses a 64k line as its
backbone for 250,000 users then it will be slow! In the U.K most of
Demons stiff runs on 2MB lines so it is fairly quick. Also remember
that the trans-Atlantic T1 lines have limited bandwidth and do server
most of the traffic from the U.S
An now for some good news!
Jan Kohl, who visited me over Xmas has agreed to set up a mini mirror
site for The Pits in the US, this should help a lot of you get quicker
access to the files from The Pits.
At present we're not sure if we will simply put the files from The
Pits on his server and have a UK and US link from The Pits or put a
complete "Mini Workshop" on his site, the latter needing more space.
We are also looking for other people to mirror our site in other
locations around the world, mainly the work shop section.
Anyone who thinks they can help, let us know.
Jed
