OT: Goodyear Leaves CART,IRL, and F1

by btgos » Thu, 28 Oct 1999 04:00:00

At NASCAR.com it was announced that Goodyear was no longer going to involve
itself in the major forms of open wheel racing. CART, IRL and F1 teams will
no longer have the option of using Goodyear tires on their race cars. It
seems that Goodyear was sick of losing money on the deal.
<quote> Goodyear Exec Grant further noted that "our exits from Formula One,
CART and IRL were business decisions that have absolutely no bearing on our
relationship with the NASCAR organization. NASCAR continues to increase in
popularity and is where virtually every motorsports supplier and consumer
products company wants to be. <quote>
So Goodyear is dumping the open wheel cars, do to their lack of popular
support, and is making NASCAR the focus of it's racing program.
Just to add fuel to the debate over NASCAR VS. CART-IRL-F1.
Have fun...

But they were out of F1 last year....In those series above GoodYear was
getting kicked seriously, it isn't like anyone really cared in  CART, the
only thing that is weird is that they got out of the IRL.

Why would anyone want anything to do with the IRL ?? <G>

BTW... BF Goodrich is getting involved in stock cars. They are now the official
sponsor of ASA.

now if they would only leave nascar, all would be well in the world.

And just how is F1 "far" bigger than NASCAR.  More total spectators, more
sponsors, more teams, more cars, more races, more total TV viewers, use more
tires, just what are you trying to say with "far bigger"?  Paul

Don Goodyear likely will not join F-1.  I hate to see Goodyear blaming
their leaving of CART and IRL because their series are competing
against each other, and they are disappointed by the exposure the
company gets.

The fact, is that Firestone/Bridgestone has slapped Goodyear around
since they entered open-wheel, whether it is CART, IRL, or F-1.
Goodyear was being dumped by major teams: Ferrari, McLaren,
Neuman-Haas, and was the tire for the last 3 CART champions, and the
last F-1 champion.  In fact their strongest supporter in Penske finaly
decided to run Firestones nest year.  Goodyear is just hiding behind
the open-wheel split in America.

I would love to see Firestone enter Nascar, they probably would be on
the pole within 4 races, who knows maybe even at Daytona.  Goodyear
wants to sign long term contracts with Nascar, so they can keep out
competition.  Also, Nascar doesn't mind since Firestone is a Japanese
company, and believes competition in tires will raise costs for teams.

Maybe he means that tires are "much bigger" in F1 than in NASCAR, because
that's the only thing its bigger at. Of course, like most people who aren't
NASCAR fans, he doesn't realize that NASCAR is more than just Winston Cup.

IIRC they recently acquired Dunlop and were rumoured to be thinking of
coming back under that brand-name.

Don,

Goodyear supplied tires to the F1 teams for years. They only left F1 a
few years ago. So don't look for them to jump back in.

Ian,

If that's the case, then I stand corrected. But in any event, the sidewall
will say Dunlap and not Goodyear.

Worldwide, F1 is huge, like soccer.  Here in the US, like soccer, it's a
niche sport with homegrown US sports being exponentially more popular.  We
in the US may not understand how popular F1 is worldwide, and people outside
of the US probably don't understand the scope of NASCAR popularity here.

So 'mericans will always think NASCAR is larger, and furriners will always
think F1 is - and they're both right, depending on where you're at :-)

Well, I'm a fan of all motor sport, except the IRL.? F1 is bigger than Nascar in
many ways.? Yes there are only 16 or 17 races a year, but worldwide it is
followed by many more people than Nascar, which tends to be a North American
viewed series.? Nascar has prospered because of people like France, where F1
prospers in spite of Mosely and Ecclestone.? The top 4 teams in F1 probably have
budgets greater than all Nascar teams combined.? NOT BETTER!? Just bigger.
