Took the words right out of my mouth. There's a lot of places moderated
by old women and you need to conduct yourself like an old woman to survive
them - killing yourself to live. Moderated forums are good places to send
the children, perhaps, but the grown-ups outa be around here - nothing like
the wild! :)

Hi lesandbob,

this is the last time I am going to say sorry for a humorous post I
made in a good mood. sorry ;-)

Agreed.

I'm sorry if my statement of preference was taken as some sort of
denigration of the effort that the RSCers put into their site.
However It is possible to be appreciative and frustrated at the same
time.

For simple text explanations of situations and follow up
comments/conversations I personally find the threaded text format of
most newsgroup viewers such as outlook easier to follow then any web
based forum (rsc's threaded layout helped some).

I find it fairly easy to ignore entire ng threads about Eldreds weight
problems or GWB's manipulation of the weather etc..  and because of the
text nature of the ng each actually significant post generally isn't
greeted with 14 to 140 posts of rolling/dancing/bouncing smilies saying
nothing more then "thank you" or "me too", or "I love you guys" like
(all?) webforums generally are.   Invariably 30 posts down the smiley
chain is a correction/addition to the original information that gets
lost in the dross (and generates more smilies).

Not being able to post pictures/files is of course a major drawback of
ngs.

RSC frustrates me sometimes in particular because I know the answer I'm
looking for is likely in there somewhere but I can't seem to formulate
a query that can find it first time(s), and I invariably wait only 179
seconds before I try my second attempt.   I understand the resource
limitations behind minimum query lengths and delays between queries but
that's of course a direct result of setting up an independent volunteer
forum and then loading it full of useful info, you're a victim of your
own success.  The distributed nature of ngs and the corporate backing
behind google's archives makes searching faster (at least for me).

The other frustration that is entirely beyond the control of the RSC
guys is that even though the league is called RAScar half the members
post schedule/venue/setup info here and the other half post it in the
rsc forum meaning I had to look both places to get the complete picture
;)

alt.binaries.simulators.autos is still there, last I checked (5 mins
ago). It has been abandoned by those Milliken(? Alldata?) warez'rs that
completely flooded the group with the auto repair car data disks that
cost thousands of dollars for honest shops to buy.

I don't know why it isn't used more often.

Hell, I'll use it now to post my absolutely-most-positively favorite
video ever. A 'vette blasting around Road Atlanta with no commentary,
just pure unfiltered incar sound. It is aural BLISS. Turn it up. Way up.

(snip)
alt.bin.sim.autos isn't much use if you're on one of the many ISP'ds that
don't carry the binary groups which are notorious storage hogs (to say
nothing of the complications of all the pron :) )

As others have mentioned both newsgroups and web forums have their virtues
and drawbacks. I use and appreciate both forms

Yep.  Problem is, most moderated forums end up having some Napoleonic
complex minded clown being the moderator(s).  Censorship is another word for
it.

LOL - I don't remember anyone mentioning the Pits Goy?
