I wanna know how you ppl brake when using keyboard. I press brake
full just after the 100m mark, changing down gears at the same time. I
get wheel locks everytime I do that...and move further on down the bend.
I then lift up my brakes and accelerate but then, I would be moving on
the outside of the bend.
I downloaded hotlaps and actually saw that the drivers brake with
no smoke emitting from the tyres(mine has!) and changing down gears with
success! How do I do that???

PS.If possibly, explain in detail on how to brake before a bend and pls
send a hotlap!!! I really need that help!

You MUST experiment with the Brake Balance,
typically around 58:42 - 60:40 I find.  You will still often have to
quickly release the brake to avoid lockup but you'll find it a lot
better (the actual setting depends on wings)
Download Qual and Race laps from my page  (I use keys, no help) for my
GP2 Race League.
You can extract the performance data to see how I press the brake and
throttle etc, you should find that you can brake solid for at least half
the braking zone before lockup will occur (dont change down gears too
quickly either)

Firstly, brake hard and hold it for a while before changing down.

In real F1 cars, because of the way the carbon brakes work, the driver
gives the brakes a lot of pressure to get the heat up and make them
work. However, as he slows the brakes are better and lock-up is more
likely so you need to release a little pressure to stop the locking.

In GP2, you can brake successfully a lot later if you keep the brakes
on full for the first half of the braking zone and then modulate them
as you change down.

By modulating I mean come of the brakes as you downchange and
then jump back on them again.

This way, you tend not to lock up the wheels by changing down too
fast and the releasing of the brakes momentarily at the end of the
braking zone helps prevent lockup,

I use ALT for braking and after a bit of practice you can rattle down
the gearbox and keep the braking well under control.

If you use the keyboard as the control device in gp2, you must understand
it is a digital device.

This means when you press a key, it is full on, or full off, there is no
"in between".

If you use an analogue control device, eg:- an analogue joystick or
steering wheel and pedals, they offer progressive response to the control.

eg:- press pedal 30%, car accelerates  at 30% power, turn the wheel 20%
of the available wheel movement, and the car will turn at only 20% (if
its been calibrated correctly).

See how it works?

When you press a key to turn the car, the car is on full lock, When you
press a key to brake, the brakes are FULL on.

The only way around this is to dab at the keys very quickly to simulate
progressive braking/accelerating.
Whatever method you try to improve your control of the car with the
keyboard, it will take lots of practice, there is NO SHORTCUT.

I use keys and achieve reasonable times, so it can be done!!!!

The hotlaps you saw may have had analogue devices controlling the cars,
that may be why they were able to not lock up the brakes? but it can be
done also with the keys, it just takes lots of practice.

I am sending you one of my hotlaps to look at, I used the keyboard to
control the car.(Silverstone 1:24:4)

This is actually a bit soon, but I herebye announce that people driving GP2 by
keyboard should visit

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/9326/

as soon as possible! Within the next few days, a hotlap league for keyboard
drivers will start over there. An official successor to the famous HOF2 by Dave
Gymer. Preparing an advertising campaign at the moment :-)

I also compiled a Keyboard Hotlap Guide with lots of tips on how to get real
fast (you'll see that it is hard work... :-)   )

There are no laptimes or standings as yet, but this should change pretty soon as
former HOF2 competitors will be asked to submit their best times.

I put A LOT of work in this. Hope that I'll get some response...  Mail me with
comments if you liked it (or didn't...)

Jo Helsen (JOH)

PS: some of the keyboard times soon to appear in the lists (PRACTICE!):
Monaco 1m15.25X
Silverstone 1m21.887
Imola 1m18.4XX
.......
