Rant on:

What the hell is it with you webmasters out there forcing people to create
a login account to access downloads on your websites ?  Is there any
reason to do this ?

Life is just to damn complicated these days and I get the feeling that I am
not alone in my belief that this practice is just a waste of everyone's
time.

I don't care how good your track or whatever is, I have made the choice to
not create any more web accounts.

Rant off:

Thank god for the pits, Bless you Jan

I've been keeping a record of how many web sites I've 'registered' for in
the last 3 years.  So far I'm up to 114.

You're right - it's a pain in the neck and as far as I can see it's just a
stalling tactic to make people think twice before downloading and using
their (expensive) bandwidth.

I agree.

I think it's worse though.

I just picked up Half Life 2 because it was finally on sale.  $55 Retail was
WAY to much to pay for a shoot-em-up game.

When it said "Internet Connection Required", I thought this was regarding
online play.  Nope.  You are forced to create an online Steam account, and
must continue to have an internet connection, to even play it OFFLINE!

We have product activation, DRM for music downloads, and now copy protection
that validates you over the internet every damned time you play a game, even
offline.

Has anyone thought about the ramifications of these companies going out of
business.  This IS the computer industry we are talking about here.  Almost
everyone, eventually, either merges out of existance or goes out of
business.

Those with $1000 worth of downloaded music are gonna be mighty pissed if
their supplier goes out of businiess and they can no longer 'activate' their
DRM so they can listen to their music.

The world is going to hell in an Internet Hand Basket.

Dave,

I was hoping that the pits had just gotten hacked.  As time goes by I guess
that is looking less likely.  No matter what the case,  Jan and the crew at
the
USpits have served the online community way above the call.

You need only be online at the time of installation and first run, then
you can use your local cache all right.
