With this system should I buy GPL?
Pentium 200MMX (not P2)
Screamin3D video card
64 MB EDO ram
What do you think?

How about this one?

Pii-333mhz
128mb Ram
Thriller 8mb PCI
Voodoo2-12mb PCI

I'm sure it meets the "minimum" requirements but I'm concerned about full field
racing.

Not a problem Andrew. I have P300, 64 mb ram, and V2 8mb. Full field
and full detail I get 26-32 fps after leaving the line. Even when the
FR drops below 20 on the starting grid, I can hardly tell it.

GPL Yes or No?

I guess it's a NO :-(.

I've tried it, underclocking my P233MMX, using my Reactor 3D (Rendition
V1000 like your Screamin 3D) and alone on the track I get ~<24 fps, just
imagine with other cars.

I run it overclocked at 3.5*75 (262.5Mhz ) with my second 3D card (Voodoo 2)
and it's quite playable with a reduce field of cars.

I personnaly think your V1000 is the first bottleneck, then your CPU/Bus
speed. You could probably live with GPL with only a video card upgrade for
the moment.

I hope this is helpful.

I have pretty much the seame, except 48Mb RAM...Yes, buy GPL - it won't
run at full-detail (w/ smooth fps), but does run well at medium settings
that won't compromise too much in looks.

BTW, if your motherboard supports 75Mhz, o/c the chip to 225, you'll
find it makes a big difference.

Cheers!

Marc

Don't be concerned (I've got EXACTLY the same setup), but use the Voodoo2
- 36fps with a full field...

Well I'm running a PII- 300 w/ 128 MB,
Screamin 3d 2d/3d
Diamond Monster II 4MB

I tried the rendition briefly, but the frame rates were way too low. But with the
Voodoo 2 I'm geting 30+ alone and 20-30 with 19 cars, with occasional dips into the
high ***s. But even at the start it's smooth. That's at 800x600 btw, like Steve
Smith I think any resolution higher then that is nice, but overkill, and it's to
*** my frame rates.

GPL Yes or No?

The Screamin' 3D is "old technology" and really doesn't cut the mustard
with GPL.  With the Thriller board the original poster may actually get
a slight frame rate edge over the Voodoo2.

Pesonally, I have found that even running GPL in resolutions over
512x384 with a few graphics turned off (clouds, driver arms/wheel,
crowds and only having the car details turned on in the mirrors -- need
to know who's trying to pass me <G>), take too much of a frame hit with
a full field of AI at the most crucial times.  I get faster and more
consistent times the higher the frame rate.  During practice the higher
resolutions run fine.  My system is similar to yours but I have the
Intergraph v1000 card Creative Labs Voodoo2 12mb and only 64mb memory.

The worst frame hit is the pits (of course not too vital).  On the grid
it may drop to the low 20's.  As the pack spreads out, I am back to
running in the 36 range, except for many of the turns.  GPL seems to
take a frame rate hit just when it's needed the most.
