This is not really an answer to your question, but it is related.

I have played N3 online exactly twice.  My connection is poor and things
warp around so much that it isn;t even much fun.  I really don't have the
time to commit to a league or anything, etc.

Anyway,  I bumbled into a race at Talledga the first time I went online with
it.  I qualified about 13th.  I had worked my way up (actually just endured
through attrition) to 3rd. As I was driving along and looking at my fuel
levels and the projected laps, I realized with about 50 some-odd laps left
that I would need to get more gas with around 8 laps left.  The two guys in
front of me we duking it out pretty good, trading places 1-2 2-1 and were
about 20 seconds in front of me.  I decided to bet on psychology.

I pitted and filled up once I knew I would be able to finish on that
tankful.  I thought to myself that these two guys were going to be so wound
up by the end of the race that they would***up trying not to lose the
race in the pits.  I was right.  As I cruised around, pretty far behind by
then, they both pitted on the same lap and both got nailed for speeding on
pit road!!  I continued my steady cruise around, passed them as they exited
from a stop 'n' go penalty and won the race.

Wanted: 4 laps!

Sunday my N3 league races a 50% (94 lap) dega race. Today I tried out a
strategy.
The best one seems to be to drive up the fuel all the way, come in on lap 45
(I get so far whithout cautions), fill her all up,  slam on 2 right side
tires and try to finish. the only problem is that I don't seem to get her
home without splash and dash 4 laps before the finish. The AI do finish. I
drove all the race with 2 seconds ahead of the pack.
So far my only hope is to get minimum 2 cautions.
Does anybody have tips how to drive more economic at Dega? Does it help when
I draft? When 2 cars are drafting eachother, do they both gain in fuel
economy or does only the rear car?
And if it does help, can I gain like 4 full laps?

Try setting fourth gear a little talle and running some more grill tape to
decrease drag.

Don't these two suggestions cause a higher straight line speed?  Wouldn't
that burn fuel quicker?

Draft, for sure, and don't be as aggressive coming out of corners....if you
get the opportunity to ease off the gas every few laps and take a breather,
so much the better. Basically, tuck in behind a few cars, make no attempt to
pass, and you'll be FORCED to lift off the gas.

All in the 4th gear, almost any gear will draft well and eventually get up
to speed.

Just thought of another tip: on the pace lap, stay in 4th....every little
helps!

No. Think about it a bit. WHY is the straight line speed higher?

Yep, and staying in the highest possible gear in pitstops (well, not when
accelerating out...). It's easier to stay close to the max. pitlane speed
too.
