Three things:

1.  The game is very playable.  Draw-ahead and frame rate problems are being
addressed.  How many times can the man say this without people writing
"unbiased" reviews pointing out the same things?  And as for CPR crashing a
system, somebody (not Dean) needs to get a grip.  No, he didn't call you a
liar, Allison, he just told you that CPR does not corrupt operating systems.
It doesn't.  It doesn't.  It doesn't.  You're the FIRST PERSON to report this.
You had a problem before you installed CPR.  Dean had every right to say that
he didn't feel this was a major problem, because if it was, they would have
heard of it by now.  If you have computer experience, you KNOW that when you
have a registry problem, you can install Space Cadet Pinball and it will crash
your system.

2.  To all the critics:  can't you just shut the heck up for a couple of
weeks, try the patch, and then tell us what you think?  You're not saying
anything new, and you haven't for weeks.  Stop crying.

3.  Microsoft made a BIG MISTAKE waving Dean in front of RAS all by himself.
Perhaps they underestimated the questions/flames/critiques he'd get, but
honestly, if a company is going to put a presence on a newsgroup, they'd
better put FIVE guys/gals on that NG answering questions, and then pull a
couple off of that when the questions die down.  Putting one guy out here to
field everything was a stupid mistake.

>Why are there so many unhappy users of CPR here? Chew on that and

Could it be that the people that do like it either a) don't post here,
b) posted here initially but left after getting flamed to a crisp or
c) are off doing setups, paintkits, web sites, etc instead of sitting
here arguing with people who aren't afraid to sling mud?

>I don't know, Randy, but they aren't driving around in the CART:PR
>sim at a smooth rate without having to dodge the AI.

Actually I am (driving at a smooth frame rate with a full grid), but
then I'm on a P300 with a Riva 128, so I know that's freakishly
non-normal right now :).

I absolutely destroyed the field in Portland, which was funny because
I spun off into the grass several times.  I still had fun,
though...and whats worse, I don't know why. <G>

Seriously, if I could fix the problems in this sim I'd prioritize it
this way:

1. Wandering on the straights (Alison's null zone problem, nicely
presented)
1. Add some AI (I'm not convinced there is any yet)
2.  Yellow flags  (probably going to be deferred to next patch, but as
long as they get it done right ... *sigh*)

There's many more things I want to see happen with this sim.  I just
hope the MS people are still monitoring the forum so that they can
collect this feedback, both pre and post-patch.

It's bad enough that a company releases garbage. What brings the
*** to over boiling point are those that defend such companies. Why do
so many supposed males like to be screwed???????????????????

Yeah, one time it's the silent majority, and another time it's the m***
majority...

That's what immigrants hear often: If you dont't like it here, get out!

>>Three things:

>Not for Alison, they aren't.

She played it on a P-133 and a P-166... of course she's not going
to get satisfactory results. Maybe if she read r.a.s. before buying
the game, she'd have known this. I only have the demo, but I am
getting satisfactory (to me!) frame rates in the 4 car race... (20 fps
with the Viper video card, 15 fps pre-Viper... that's with hills being
drawn, the***pit on, and the sound on). It's not great performance,
but neither is GP2 - a sim that's been out for what? 2 years?

He offered to send her one!

I did - so what? If she didn't have a rendition card, would her review
of ICR2 be so glowing? Her system is optimized for ICR2. If it
were optimized for CPR, I'm sure she would sing a slightly different
tune. (Though, I realize that no system configuration will fix the AI...)

He didn't care? I'm sure he did... he cared enough to see her post,
visit her site, and write up a reply with about 2 hours of her first
post. So he TOLD her CPR didn't crash o/s's. On it's own, I'm
sure it doesn't. He didn't ask her what else she was running
when she installed it. He didn't ask her what else she did to the
computer that day (before and after the installation - she said
she installed it, ran it fine, and then it crashed when she re-booted.).
Neither did she explain all this in detail. She just accused CPR
of wiping out her registry. That's a strong accusation.

So he was a little short with her... she never gave him a chance
after that. She could have come back and said politely that she
tried this and that, that she didn't know for sure but had narrowed
it down to CPR being the problem... She didn't. She jumped right
on that opportunity to complain about Dean, MS, and all tech
support people everywhere... you think that's fair?

There's a handful of vocal critics, me thinks... The reason there
aren't a lot of people singing CPR's praise is that they're having
TOO MUCH FUN playing, that they don't want to stop and read all
the whining here!

(just a little tongue-in-cheek comment there to lighten things up....)

He changed all right - he started responding to people in the same
tone/manner that they responded to him...

Here's another point.  You have the right to say anything you want on this
newsgroup.  However, whether you have the right to do something is often
different than saying that saying it is the right thing to do.

I seriously wonder what % of their CART customer base Microsoft thinks lives in
this newsgroup.  It may help explain why Dean felt he could walk away without
getting in trouble for it.

Randy,

I made this point in an earlier post.... If the only people purchasing
their products are those who are on RAS... they will be out of business
very very quickly.

No, that doesn't sound very likely at all. This forum is the best
-place on the net for getting accurate information on driving sims.
You have to read for a few weeks of course, and filter out the few
flamers and whiners.

True, but after a certain flame period at the beginning of a product
lifecycle, a lot of the enthusiasts who have decided to stick with the
product go off and form offline leagues, hotlap tables, paintkit stuff
(we know the end is upon is when CPR gets an IRL carset!!!!)

Hi Randy,

Not to start an argument, but you do realise that you didn't answer
his question? He never asked where the happy people where, merely why
so many unhappy people (not unhappy people expressed as a ratio of
happy people) :-)

Frankly this whole thing is very tiring. One of the things you learn
very quickly on usenet is that the vast majority of people will
_never_ be deflected from their opinion - as the old joke goes "even
if you prove it to me I won't believe you". Everyone has their opinion
and everyone has expressed their opinion, but now it seems near
everyone is getting all fired up trying to bring everyone around to
their point of view. I've done it myself, I'll probably do it again,
and it's a real waste of time.

Why doesn't everyone go and do something useful. Write to Dean and ask
if you can help with the testing of the patch (offer an apology in the
meantime if you flamed his ass), go and do a carset, make a website,
develop some setups that can be posted or whatever. Every minute spent
typing flames into a keyboard is a minute wasted, because it's gonna
come right back at you, and the opinion of the guy at the other end,
if changed at all, will be stronger than ever.

Not directed at you Randy, I've just finished reading the guy's
message saying he's gonna take a week off, and thinking what a good
idea it is. That got me thinking. It's either the week's holiday or
put in some heavy kill files that expire in a couple of weeks.

Cheers!
John
