Observations about "Dean" and his "RAS support"

by Doug Bur » Tue, 16 Dec 1997 04:00:00

This is neither a "pro-Dean" or an "anti-Dean" message...

But one thing has become more evident over the last day or two...

simulations division.  Many may say, well...so what.

But let me just point out a few things.

1.  Dean is NOT unbiased.  If anything, this revelation sort of explains
his sudden exit.  Contrary to what Dean may have said, he didn't exit
RAS primarily because of the flaming.  He exited because he couldn't
refute Allison's claims.  CPR is *far* from being the realistic SIM that

.. MTM was certainly not a SIM... And Microsoft has no great track
record of publishing "sims" like Papy... or even Microprose (GP2).

So what is evident is that Allison's work/posts/review totally
invalidates CPR as a SIM.  Given that Dean's JOB is to make SIMS for
Microsoft, how COULD he continue in this forum?

2.  Dean was sincere in his revelation that we didn't know how good of a
chance we had on impacting the future of CPR.  The only problem is that
RAS is no different than many other parts of the internet.  For every 1
part good user, add 3 parts bad user...  And so it goes.  The problem is
that there is NO way to get the good w/out having to take some of the
bad.  It's too bad that Dean wasn't a little more thick skinned.  But I
guess if you eat, breathe and live something, you are gonna take it to
heart/personally.

3.  What we are saying here ultimately will affect few ...

Just my $.02

Actually, I suspect it is more that the Microsoft definition of a
realistic sim doesn't exactly match up with many on r.a.s and that is
what Dean could not accept.

By Microsoft's definition (and I rather suspect, the majority of the game
buying public), I'm sure CPR *is* a "sim". But that's of little comfort
to those of us who demand more :(

Cheers,
Richard
