I've seen several posts in reference to settings for both the Logitech
and Microsoft FF wheels. In most cases they have maxed the FF setting, but
turned off the return to center. Why would you want to do this?

Because it simply is not needed.

Uncheck the box on the settings page of the Profiler.

Kyrill,

How do I disable the centering force of a Logitech FF wheel?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I can't find the option.

Isn't it disabled anyhow?
AFAIK normally the "return to sender" <g> "return to center" option is only
used if FF is disabled or not supported (SCGT beeing an exception).
I only tried a few laps running without "return to center" and did not
notice a difference, do you?

You can disable the centering spring by going to:
Control panel -> Game controllers
Select the Logitech Wingman, click on properties, then click on
the settings button.

Have fun!

The Logitech FF 3.2 drivers have an option the center while FF effects
are active. I think if you select this it works in all games. But default I
believe there is now a centering force in non FF games.

What game doesn't autodisable the MS FF return to center feature ?

I have heard talks about such problems in SCGT, but when I turned off self-
centering I found the car pretty weird to drive. Maybe i should try it again.

GPL disables the self centering when you have FF enabled.  As long as
the wheel's drivers are behaving themselves, you shouldn't need to
disable the return to center option on your wheel.

Or were you asking "Why should the return to center be turned off (no
matter who does it - me or the software)?"  Because force commands sent
to the device are additive.  If game's physics engine computes what
force should be applied through the wheel, and then the wheel itself
adds some other force to the mix, you don't get the intended overall
force.

Randy,

There are 2 FF forces that I can detect when I play GPL1.1.

One is determined by "max_steering_torque", lower this figure and
there will be more force to turn the wheel on it own.

The 2nd force is damping force thats only felt when the wheel is
turned at speed, the same effect as when an electric motor's "+" & "-"
is connected together.

Even when "max_steering_torque" is set to 1000 and the game FF is
minimized, the 2nd damping force does not change.
Is there anyway to reduce this damping as I swear my crappy desk is
about to snap if not my arms or the MSFFWheel clamp! :)

Thanks.

K. Malmin) dribbled the following:

Well, GPL1.1 dosent autodisable the self center on my friends
computer, but it does on mine. We both have MSFF Wheel. The only
diffrence I can think of is that my friend installed the MSWheel
driver/profiler(well, I installed it for him) programme from origanl
CD whereas I downloaded the latest version from the net.

Seems to make sense, I use the Saitek Wheel which uses  the same technique,
but without profiler and it autodisables the self center force AFAIWitness.
One Question: Do you have to use the profiler with the MS Wheel, or can you
disable it?
I mean one prog less in the background would help many games in terms of
framerates...

YES! I have an answer.....but I dont have a solution. :(

I dont have to turn self center off to play GPL1.1 with FF and I have
a soundblaster live! value.
Today, I swapped soundcard with my second machine(Aureal vortex2) as I
cant hear foot steps in Half-Life fortress using the Live!.

And guess what! My main machine now with Vortex sound card requires me
to disable self center before I play GPL1.1 with FF, go figure!

Hmm, I have aVortex A3D soundcard too and have to disable the centering,
coincidence ?? Maybe not.

I'll try my other soundcard at the weekend, see if that makes a difference.
