I don't use an AMD chip in this current machine, but I can offer an
educated guess: when GPL came out a few months ago, people noted that
L2 cache size and speed are important for good framerates. Therefore,
the K6-3 with its fast on-chip L2 cache should be considerably better
suited for GPL than an k6-2 - especially if you also have a board with
a great L2 cache, which will then operate as L3 cache. This might
already be overkill, though, and the K6-3 is much more expensive than
the K6-2.
Having said this, I'm by no means sure I would buy an AMD based system
for GPL. From what I read here, it seems as if an intel Celeron
powered machine (400 MHz or more) delivers a bigger bang for the buck.
I have a nice super socket 7 board (FIC VA 503+) which I intend to
keep using, so for me, the upgrade route is clear: K6-2 400 (or more)
or K6-3 400 (or more) if they become much cheaper. But if I were to
build a new machine, I would buy a configurable slot 1 mainboard with
the BX chipset and a Celeron 400 (with slot 1 adaptor) now. With the
Celeron, you're limited to slower bus speeds, but this is not that
important once your L2 cache is on-chip.
As for graphics cards: the Voodoo 3 seems to be the logical choice
when your main concern is GPL. BTW, what's the difference between the
V3 2000, 3000, and 3500? Do they differ a lot hardware-wise, or is the
main difference in the software bundle?
